    Go U.S.S. Lake Erie!!!!!!!

US may shoot down satellite Wednesday

WASHINGTON - An attempt to blast a crippled U.S. spy satellite out of the sky using a Navy heat-seeking missile — possibly on Wednesday night — would be the first real-world use of this piece of the Pentagon's missile defense network. But that is not the mission for which it was intended.

The government issued notices to aviators and mariners to remain clear of a section of the Pacific beginning at 10:30 p.m. EST Wednesday, indicating the first window of opportunity to launch an SM-3 missile from a Navy cruiser, the USS Lake Erie, in an effort to hit the wayward satellite.

The "spy satelite" story is a scam to avoid public criticism for simply wanting to test weapons systems.

China shot down a satelite to show their capability, so now we have to shoot down a satelite to show ours. Its just war games, only its the begining of the solar system and galactic war games.

    ...
If that were so, they'd have done this 20 years ago.

Maybe, but Im not so sure. 20 years ago they were shooting mistles into space but they were missing. The only reason to make it public now is because they're pretty sure they can hit it. Would be a major blunder if they missed this one! And its possible that they might.

yeah, that would kinda' bite and make us look really lame. Like when Russia went into space first. That made us look real bad and back wards. That's when they started removing things out of schools that had been there previously. Schools started changing the way they did things. We've been slowly circling the drain of ignorance ever since. Funny how when you try to improve things it back fires on ya'.

Russia and China are stating this is the reason. If it's true, you can blame China for starting the game. And it's incredible that they criticize us today for something they started last year.

The US is more dependent on satelite technology than any other nation. Since China has proven it's capable of anti-satelite missles, it's necessary for the US to improve its space defense. If this event is a test, then I'm glad they're doing it.

Isn't the fuel they are worried about explosive? Would the unit just burn up on re-entry and explode from the heat? It doesn't have heat shield built on it.

It won't all burn up. They said most of it would survive re-entry, and would make an uncontrolled descent who-knows-where, scattering debris and fuel over hundreds of miles.

why won't it burn up? It's not built "not to burn up on reentry". Why wouldn't it explode as it started to get very hot on reentry? And if they hit it with an explosive you still have all those pieces landing somewhere anyways.

I think since the satelite never reached its full altitude, it won't go through enough atmosphere to fully burn up. It's the size of a bus, and apparently large enough to survive re-entry. They said by blowing it up, the smaller pieces should burn up during re-entry.. and it's altitute is low enough that the fragments won't scatter into space the way the Chinese one did.

I'm thinking that being a satellite launched in 2006, that is now defective, and could land anywhere, somewhat intact, it might be a security threat. After all, this technology is only at least two years old, that could fall into the hands of whoever. Wish they would have used the same logic back in 2001 when that U.S. spy plane collided with a Chinese jet and then landed on Chinese soil so the Chinese could have a field day with what was inside the U.S. plane. Why wasn't that plane destroyed or ditched in the ocean instead of being allowed to fall in the hands of the Chinese?

Its a dudd satalite that had a dual purpose.

    1. To hide missing money.
    2. Target practice for new weapons systems.

NASA is a puppet and scapegoat program to hide what is really going on.

Because there were still people inside the plane.

USS Lake Erie apparently got a direct hit on the fuel tank of the satellite since it exploded in a fireball.

I'm just going to miss the $40 million it cost to fire the missile. BTW, they didn't have the money in the budget, oh well, nice to blow $40 million when "Iraq" needs a new hospital, soccer field, streets, water treatment plant, etc.
