    Smile Hockey on Hoyt Lake

    Yow, this is great!!

This should be a lot of fun. Skating here was a great Buffalo pastime, with thermoses of hot chocolate and lots of red cheeked people.

Hockey hits ice at Delaware Park

Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park will serve as a backdrop for the first-ever pond hockey tournament in Buffalo, sponsored by Labatt USA.

The day-long tournament, featuring 16 adult teams, is set for Feb. 16 and ties in with Labatt's sponsorship of USA Hockey's national pond hockey tourney -- set for that same weekend in Wisconsin.

Hoyt Lake was chosen because of its picturesque setting.

"Hoyt Lake is a beautiful place to be," said James Hornung, Erie County Parks Commissioner.

Officials from Labatt USA, who moved its headquarters to Buffalo from Norwalk, Conn. last summer, said they hope the Hoyt Lake tournament serves multiple purposes including bringing people to historic Delaware Park and to set the foundation for a larger, annual event next winter......"

So all the chlorine Bob Delano dumped is finally out? That lake didn't melt for years.

    Mini winter classic

Its a mini winter classic! This is a great idea.

Here is the link to the BUF news article, that says mostly the same things as the 1st post.

It is Saturday from 8:00-4:00. Another good thing Labatt's brought to the area in addition to their headquarters last June.

I wonder if they will serve Labatt's to keep people warm

The hockey tournament has been moved to be in the Erie Basin Marina instead of Hoyt lake, as the lake is not frozen enough.

Do you think the Delano Dump is still impacting the lakes ability to freeze? Or is it just another symptom of global warming?

my guess is that the water is filthy.....that's why it doesn't freeze....you used to see people fishing in the summer....unless i'm mistaken....nobody fishes there any more....

I run year round in that area. The lake does freeze often. I believe the City had its winter fest with ice skating a couple of years ago. No problems from what I remember.
