Lightbulb Ellicott Creek corridor flooding ?

If you live in the Ellicott Creek Corridor - down stream of Lancaster,NY - click the link below - its not the natural flow of the Creek thats keeping your property wet -

It could be the 18-million gallons of water Lancaster is pumping into the Creek .

Once you click the link below , you can see where the waters coming from - then call your local Town Hall and ask about it .
They know - or - should know !

Do you pay flood insurance ?
Is your property wet all year ?
    Have you sustained flood damage?
    Don't just assume it's mother nature - she's getting help from Lancaster's Government !

    Cool

This fruit loop was on this rant a few weeks back. He stated the discharge is 18 million per YEAR - about 34 gallons per minute. If he thinks that is causing flooding he has bigger fish to fry.

18 Million gallons of water a year + the natural content of Ellicott Creek

    Your close - 34 gpm x 60= 2040 gph(per hour)

    2040 gph x 24hours= 49,315gpd (per day)

    49,315 gpd x 7 days a week = 345,205 gpw (gallons per week)

    345205 gpw x 52 weeks = 17,950,660 gallons per year.

Using "white owl's" logic - that half penny tax the County added to our sales tax doesn't add up to much either .
Just look at the photo's - the first two pictures show the Creek at Pavement Rd(Lancaster) calm - flowing slowly. Then look at the "white water rapids at Genessee St.(Rt.33) in Bowmansville - just two streets West of Pavement !

If you took away the extra 49,315 gallons of water a day being pumped in - well see pictures one and two !

That water comes from the stone quarry - some of it is used to catch "rock dust during processing" and washing crushed stone . Then its pumped into Ellicott Creek . No study , health or environmental has been done and presented to the public - by the Quarry or Lancaster's Town Board who approves of this operation . God knows if any agency like the Department of Environmental Conservation even knows or has approved this either .

Ask your local Officials - you take a look - judge for yourself - flood insurance has gone up , in some area's by 40% just in the last couple years .

I said it "adds to the flooding problem" it increases the duration and overall impact of flooding - thats the facts .

I cannot see where the discharge pipe from the pump is in your pictures. Is it picture number 7 or is that just a disturbance in the water?? What is that building in the background with the trucks?

Why is there a need to have the pumps going all the time? Electric motors suck a lot of electric and I cannot imagine it being a tiny pump the size of a house hold sump pump in this application.

    Try this satellite link -

Click on this link - it will show an actual satellite photo of the area - click on the small highlighted square to enlarge - look in the center - you will see on the right side of the NYS Thruway , where the stone quarry water appear to be adjacent to the north side of the road - now slowly look to your left - cross the thruway - you will see a "black line" (water pipe) at the end of the pipe - just before Rt.33 Genessee Rd. - notice the "white plume(not sure if thats the correct term) - you can follow it all the way to Ellicott Creek - just East of Harris Hill -just upstream from the rapids.

I'll take your word for it that water is being pumped into the stream.

But, if you're saying that the rapids are proof it - sorry, that's just wrong. Have you ever been rafting or kayaking? It's common to have a gentle stretch of water followed by rapids.

    A cause

Somehow or other, I get the impression that this post is about something the initiator believes and will use any straw to prove his/her position correct. So what is the harm done and how does one correct that "harm" ?

Well first the harm is flooded land , shore line erosion , bridge undermining due to erosion , wet basements , yards and roads - whether its in Lancaster or Downstream - the natural flows and duration of flooding is intensified and prolonged due to the extra water being pumped in.

Home owners are forced to buy flood insurance - usually two to three times the cost of regular home owners insurance . Plus the regular home owners insurance. To collect on "Flood insurance" you need water reaching the main floor of the house - basements are rarely covered - what normally floods - basements.

To add insult to injury - if your local government takes no corrective actions - you are penalized again - you pay higher premiums!

Most local Governments receive grants and funds from the State and Federal Government to help correct these issues . As was the case in Louisiana - Lancaster hasn't done any thing to reduce flooding . They have filled in Creek tributaries to eight different Creeks - they have "rerouted" tributary's and Creek beds to accommodate developers needs for cheap land .

The filling of "wetlands" removes the "natural sponges and filters" nature put in place. More run off water from homes , down spouts , yard drains , paved parking lots and roadways are directed into the storm water systems (when there installed) into Creeks and low lying areas - instead of the natural method of ground water retention which includes - natural filtering then slowly migrating to the Creeks .

Its not just the 18 million gallons from the stone quarry - its all the "man made contributors" to the natural volume of the Creeks - another issue is whats in that water - soaps , gas , oil , road salt , roofing asphalt residue , and even yard chemicals are added.

Many times the Local Government(In Lancaster,NY) have been made aware of these issues and their affects . Instead of "Planning" for these issues and mitigating them - they sight one development at a time and say theres no problems - Our Supervisor has been quoted many times saying , "There is no flooding issues" - he even said he would rather close Stony Rd . and demolish the houses , instead of spending money to fix what they helped create. They actually rerouted Ellicott Creek to facilitate development.

As far as the 18 million gallons - thats only pointed out because its easily seen and felt . How does one do the "Town wide Math" to figure the overall added volume to all eight Creeks affected ?

Many times the Local Government has been asked to help improve the situation - It has been suggested that the Stone quarry pumping be halted during rain or snow thaw events . That would lessen the flooding during those times. Simple - but our Government operates under the idea that "denial and inaction" leads to "Plausible denial" - in other words - if they don't see or acknowledge it - they aren't responsible for it.

Check out the link below : this shows developers burring sewer pipes in a "Federally Protected wetlands" adjacent to Ellicott Creek , Lancaster, NY - the land was "stripped" to within 12 inches of the shore line - you can see fallen trees and silt filled areas . The Town says they cant correct the damming or clear the Creek because its "Protected wetlands" and feeding grounds for rare "Herons" - but look what they encourage developers to do !

    Windows Live Spaces

How do you make Local Government act responsibly - when their campaigns are financed by developers and their charge cards are paid with tax dollars ?
