Is Buffalo a family friendly and children friendly city?

One of my favorite songs from sound of music:

    CAPTAIN:
    Edelweiss, Edelweiss
    Every morning you greet me
Small and white clean and bright
You look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow
    Bloom and grow forever
    Edelweiss,Edelweiss
    Bless my homeland forever.

CAPTAIN, MARIA, THE CHILDREN AND CHORUS:
Small and white clean and bright
You look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow
    Bloom and grow forever
    Edelweiss,Edelweiss
    Bless my homeland forever.

and with so many of our churchs closing...and their choirs and their schools

and the toxic pessimism that seems to prevade our city

    and the drugs and shootings

    and the alcohol and vomiting

children are being raised on the street....many arent literate...and many are but dont read...there isnt a decent place to sit and read in Buffalo
we seem to just dismiss culture and history as fringe benefits and wastes of money neglecting any benefit to civic pride in our city that can be shared by everyone....as well as our visitors.

We are just starting to applaud our grammer schools, high schools and colleges with art shows at places like the Central Terminal

I visit other cities and their high schools dont just put on plays but they broadcast those plays on TV

I visit other cities and their schools and churchs dont just have choirs but they broadcast those choirs on TV

should the above be on par with say local sports...

and where are our awards for children in mathmatics, science, literature, technology, etc....how are we recognizing them

and children start businesses all the time....are we recognizing and awarding them

what about civics, are we recognizing any kids for the good things they do for thir community and neighborhood

was reading the NYTimes today, did you know that everyone who graduates high school gets their name published in the newspaper. Should our kids get their names in the paper, should "A" kids get their pictures, should dropouts get their names in the paper but also reported to a social worker.

are we elevating our children and our families to the penultimate

do we have the civic pride to bless our hometown forever
is buffalo a place for our children to bloom and grow?

Is this something BuffaloRising or BuffaloNews should be doing? Reporting the very best our future generation represents? What are your thoughts?

The Buffalo News has a feature called Class Act (p. B5 in today's paper) which highlights an outstanding young Western NYer.

Is your question focused mainly on the city or all of WNY?

Buffalo had a song "Buffalo's Got the Spirit Talking Proud, Talking Proud" ... doesn't that make you want to march after that little chick with the big brown hair through the streets of Buffalo?

Good God - isn't that the most horrifying thing to have trapped in your brain for all these years? Reminded me of the opening sequence to the New Zoo Revue. I've been working really hard to eliminate that mess from my gray matter, but there it sits.
