St Gerards one of our most beautiful treasures..

St Gerards sits in the corner of Bailey & Delavan ..Being a resident of the area I can tell you it is viewed as a beacon of light to the community ..The church has always been meticulousy maintained..No matter how bad the corner is.. St Gerards was sacred ground..never once did I see graffiti or litter anywhere on the property.. Never did we see kids hanging out in front of the church, sitting on the steps or hanging out in the driveway.

The city is shrinking, parishoners left the city and moved to the suburbs often times leaving behind their church for another closer to their new homes... As St Gerards welcomes its last visitors.. I hope someone steps forward to claim this beauty..But I realize the chances are slim.

My aunt & uncle's clan went o St. Gerards. I've been to many weddings etc., there. It is absolutely imperative that this church be left intact We can't left anything happen to St. Gerards. It is truley a treasure. As soon as you walk in you realize that you entered a very unique little sanctuary. The ceiling is gorgous. The FEEL is ACCEPTANCE. Something has to be done to preserve this beautiful asset.

Is this the church with the bowling ally downstairs?

I agree wth you completely.. But if nobody steps up to the plate than the church should be mothballed ASAP.. Remove everything of value and warehouse it and completely secure it... I keep thinking of St Matthews and how if someone gets involved with it very soon it can be saved if not.. its gone.

My dear spouse went to school there as a child. It is sad to see Buffalo's neighborhoods unable to sustain such beautiful places of worship.

Buffalo would be able to sustain its urban neighborhoods if it rebuilt its office, warehouse and light industrial parks so that our urban neighborhoods still had jobs.

Yes expressways like the Kensington and the Scajaquada destroyed urban neighborhoods and yes they need to be minimized or burried

BUT THERE ARE TWO ISSUES AT PLAY ON THE EASTSIDE WHICH NEED TO BE ADDRESSED (BUT ALL NEAR URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS):

    1) JOBS HAVE TO BE BROUGHT BACK TO THESE NEIGHBORHOODS

    2) NEW INFILL RESIDENTIAL NEEDS TO BE CONSTRUCTED BECAUSE MANY OF THE HOMES ARE TO SMALL FOR CURRENT FAMILIES. MANY OF THESE HOMES SIMPLY HAVE TO BE REBUILT FOR THE EASTSIDE TO RETURN.

    MY SUGGESTION:
TAKE THE REVENUE FROM THE SENECA CASINO OFF BUDGET AND PUT IT INTO A BUFFALO ONLY IDA/VENTURE FUND...LET IT BE MANAGED NOT BY BURACRACY BUT BY THE RAND GROUP....WHICH CAN BALANCE VARIOUS FORMS OF PAYBACK ON INFRASTRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT.

Actually, they are. Maybe not the bigger rooms like the parlor, living room and dinning room, but the closets and bathrooms are very small by today's standards.
Did I say "parlor"? Does anyone have a davenport in their parlor?

My Nana had a davenport in her front room.

Wouldn't you say that the east side has a lot of problems that bigger rooms would not solve?

Yeah, but I was just answering your statement about house sizes.
You need people to want to move there. There is nothing to motivate me to move there. I have one friend on the east side. That's it. There is nothing else to make me want to move there. I would pay way more to heat a home on the east side for one month than I pay for my mortgage where I am now. I can't afford to buy a house and fix it up even if I bought the house for $1.00, a buck. It's just not that easy.
There needs to be industry, or something on the East side, to employ people so that people are motivated to move back.
If I had the money, I would love to buy a cluster of homes on a city block. Say 4 houses on a square block where all the backyards joined. I'd keep the best house and knock down the rest so I could have a big backyard. Except, I'd do it on the West side so I could be closer to family

Yes it is the church with the bowling ally's down stairs. There were two of them down there. When I was a kid, I used to work there setting up the pins.
It was hard when you played by yourself.

I grew up in that neighborhood
