Welcome back Murray. We missed your sense of humor
Role call...Murray...present
I have been suspiciously quiet since last week before the great American holiday known as Thanksgiving. The reason is I made a cross country trek across this great land. Actually it was only from Colorado back to the wonderful WNY area. Just a few observations from my trip...The great John Denver had it right when he sang "Rocky Mountain High"...Wow was I high...I mean in altitude...but absolutely one of the most gorgeous areas I have ever been in the U.S....then it was downhill from there. I'm sure there are others out there who drove the I-80 route through Nebraska...what's up with that...It's like plopping a tred mill in the middle of Eden and running on it for 6 hours or so...These words summed up what nebraska is all about...and I saw it just over the Co./Neb border...in bright lights that lit I-80 it said..."Merry Christmas. Eat Beef"...NO JOKE!!! Then came Iowa...ooof aaaahh...I thought there were some backwards people in this area (and there are), but holy kangaroo...I never seen so many mullets and high top running shoes since I went to last year's Canal Fest in N.T. Also...I swear every person in Iowa has a growth on their face. It was like a "Twilight Zone" episode...where every one had a growth on there face, grew mullets and drank Busch Light....SCARRRRRRYYYYY. I did not stop at all in Illinois or Indiana, but I HAD to stop in Ohio....I don't think Ohio knows about cell phones yet because I have a national carrier (probably the biggest known carrier, but I am not a paid spokesperson so I will not mention their name), and I had no service for the first 2 hours into Ohio. Yes there werre mullets, but I got the feeling that I was somewhat traveling back into the 1990's at least. Finally...onward home to Buffalo. I drove as fast as I could (71 mph due to a governor on the truck) through Erie, PA becasue I did not want to get sucked into the black hole of doledrums. Finally across the NYS boarded....thank you for entering NYS, now here's a ticket so you can pay us...(don't feel bad, Ohio and Indiana also had tolls and Ohio was the most expesive.) Drving though I noticed a sign along the highway something about entering Indian land...blah blah blah...all will be scalped...at least that was my interpretation because they wrote a novel on a sign next to a highway that someone would have to come to a complete stop to read. Finally I thought I made it back out of the twilight zone when I read "Welcome to Buffalo An All-America City", but then when I drove to where I live dowtown the nightmare wasn't over....THE WWE WAS IN TOWN....MULLETS AND HIGH TOP SNEAKERS AND A COMBINED I.Q. OF 12 AND 16 TEETH AND STICKERS OF CALVIN PEEING ON A FORD OR CHEVY EMBLEM....I WAS STILL STUCK IN THE "TWILIGHT ZONE".
G'day all.

Glad to see your travelling our wonderful country--not as nice as New Zealand!

You are absolutely correct Sir...nothing like the great new Zealand!!!
The Rockies are beautiful. Your right about Nebraska and Iowa---terrible. They have a huge bridge across I80 that goes to the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum or something like that---Its the only thing you see through Nebraska.

Glad you had a safe trip back.
I made the drive from Denver to Knoxville last spring. Nebraska and Iowa can't be any worse than Kansas! My gosh, it just goes on and on and on. And Missouri ain't much better.
Utah is the best...Ihad to stop every 5 miles or so just to get out of the car and look---I'd love to build a community in the mountains out there!Originally Posted by Longtimegone
Utah is wonderful! The drive from Denver to Salt Lake City just takes your breath away. Did you get to SLC? And there's an island in the lake....can't remember the name of it....we saw bison and antelope and all kinds of neat birds we don't have in the east.Originally Posted by Velvet Fog
The only problem with Utah is that it's hard to get ahead in any job if you're not a Mormon. (no, I'm not anti-mormon, just know this from several people who have lived in/around SLC)
Never made it to SLC--and don't feel you have to validate everthing you say--like your not a mormon hater--people on here our jerks and make assumptions----The Mormons control the entire West--politically and financially.Originally Posted by Longtimegone
But I went through the San Joaquin side and east to denver. It was beautiful---I love the fact you can get out and sit over a 5000 foot cliff---If Ihad the money I'd build right in the middle of Utah.
Excuse me, Murray, but when I lived in Nebraska, it was at least a half-century behind Iowa, and I don't think it's caught up in the thirty plus years since I've been out there. Iowa is like Genessee County with fewer trees while Nebraska is like the Southern Tier without the hills and woods.
True on the Mormons. They're a very powerful group in a lot of neighboring states, especially in northern Arizona, southern Idaho, and even into eastern Oregon and Washington. They're less powerful in the western parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado and in Nevada.

As far a Murray's post. I used to drive that twice a week.
What a nightmare.
Ohio is the world's longest speedbump.
Let me articulate this for you:
"I'm not locked in here with them. They're locked in here with me!!"
