i know I've complained about this before, but people and companies aren't ever going to move here if WNY'ers keep up their negative-nancy whining to everyyone who will listen. People that put down their hometown at every chance they get are only going to perpetuate the ugly-buffalo cliche and keep people and jobs far away from here.

I am dead serious with this slogan, I originally had "Again" at the end of it, the res said don't use the Again, just have Buffalo: Grow With Us, which hopefully there is hope, as long as people care or give a darn, there is potential, NYC & Albany & those state mandates MUST change, we're far too much taxed, too much gov't waste, NYS's "leaders" know how to allow their backers abuse NAFTA & CAFTA, killing the poor & middle class! A lot of people blame our "demise" on weather, people don't care about the weather, if there's jobs here that sustain families, lower taxes, great housing market, pro sport teams, solid downtown area, people would cone back....

Trying to be somewhat funny with that one...I really meant that a Bufffalo smells bad, not that our city necessarily does, although the sewers near HSBC arena give off a horrible stench. I was trying to tie in the fact that we stink as a tourist destination - to the animal.

but on a more serious note - I would love to change the name of our city. Never really liked "Buffalo"

New slogan? That's it? For real?

New slogan? That's it? For real?

I tried to help. Five years ago, when we were meandering through a sloganless wilderness, I reached out to our readers. The Convention & Visitors Bureau, on the cusp of coming up with a region-branding slogan, had run out of money and ditched the effort. I wrote a column asking folks for suggestions.
Buffalo lacked a brand, a precise message to entice the world to think of us in a different way. A good slogan would presumably infuse outsiders with an irresistible urge to visit. They would — at least in theory — spend vast sums of money partaking of our architecture, our museums, our history, our theaters, our sports, our recreation.

Okay, here's what Buffalo needs to realize if we ever want to "grow" and get on track like other Rust Belt cities that have recovered...

Here it is... wait... wait for it...

WE ARE NOT AS "SPECIAL" AS WE THINK WE ARE.

    There, I said it.

I'm not saying it to be a "Negative Nancy," but I think Buffalo shoots itself in its own foot so many times because it is so afraid of "looking like other cities" or, even "worse," afraid of "looking like the suburbs." GASP.

But the truth is, by being afraid to let new development it or to build new buildings or to just GO FORWARD WITH PLANS WITHOUT SECOND GUESSING EVERYTHING (ie. Peace Bridge, Waterfront development, etc.) we are falling so deep into our hole... out of which we can't climb.

Oh, and I wouldn't trust Don Esmonde... He is often the FIRST one to "poo poo" anything that is new or could help the city... I still remember how he whined years ago when the Hampton Inn and Suites went up downtown and he cried and cried like a baby about how it was so "ugly and suburban" looking... Yeah, a viable business that provides accommodations to OUT OF TOWN BUSINESSPEOPLE WHO MIGHT GOD FORBID INVEST IN THE REGION and Esmonde and his ilk go all mamby pamby architecture snob on us again.

Buffalo needs to get off its ass and... NOT BE AFRAID TO GO AHEAD AND BE LIKE OTHER CITIES.

well their league is called the National Lacross League

regardless my point stands, they actually win and yet hardly ever get any press coverage
