The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Serving Erie County has drawn up preliminary plans to build a new animal shelter in West Seneca that would replace the Town of Tonawanda facility it has occupied for 49 years.

The nonprofit organization has submitted site plans to construct an estimated $9 million facility at 300 Harlem Road that would have more space and a larger medical area than the SPCA’s existing offices on Ensminger Road.

Executive Director Barbara Carr said the SPCA hopes to move into the expanded facility by 2014 as it continues to shift its focus to treating more sick or injured animals.
