( release) Erie County Executive Chris Collins and Public Works Commissioner Jerry Sentz are pleased to announce that bridges on Cemetery and Pavement Roads in Lancaster will soon be replaced. There are four bridges in total, with two on each road. All of the bridges have been flagged for safety concerns numerous times in the past. In light of those concerns, the County has been working to secure funding for these projects as quickly as possible.
The two Cemetery Road Bridges are going out to bid today. The project will cost an estimated $6 million, with 80-percent being paid by the federal government, 15-percent by the state and 5-percent by Erie County. The two bridges will be demolished and replaced. The road will be closed, with a detour in place, while construction is underway.
The first Cemetery Road Bridge, over Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks and Erie Street, was built in 1936 to replace an at-grade railroad crossing. There have been numerous inspection flags on the structure in recent years, but none serious enough to close the bridge. Lancaster School District has been detouring school buses around the bridge, which is a major inconvenience to the district. A new 105-foot steel girder bridge will replace the current structure.
The second bridge on Cemetery Road, over the north branch of Plum Bottom Creek, was built in 1923. Inspectors found safety concerns on the span on several occasions in recent years. The concerns were addressed and the bridge remained open. A new 20-foot concrete box culvert will replace the current bridge.
Erie County Executive Chris Collins said, “I am happy we were able to put the funding in place for these important bridge projects in Lancaster. This upcoming construction highlights my administration’s focus on infrastructure maintenance and repair work. Any time safety concerns are raised with county bridges, we work to secure funding for repair or replacement as quickly as we can.”
“I have been working in cooperation with the County Executive and Public Works engineers to move these projects forward and was pleased to learn that these overdue projects will be repaired now,” Legislator Fudoli said. “Due to the size and scope of the work, repairs to these bridges will generate many jobs. This is great news for the residents of the Town of Lancaster.”
“I know many citizens in Lancaster have anxiously been awaiting these projects,” said Public Works Commissioner Jerry Sentz. “I’d like to thank design consultants Erdman Anthony and Urban Engineers for getting us ready to take these projects out to bid.”

The two bridges on Pavement Road will go out to bid on April 28th of this year. The project will cost an estimated $2.8 million, with 80-percent being paid by the federal government, 15-percent by the state and 5-percent by Erie County. The road will be closed, with a detour in place, while construction is underway.

Both bridges on Pavement Road were built in 1962 by the New York Central Railroad. They have received several “red flag” warnings in recent years. While not cause for bridge closure, red flags indicate issues which require immediate repair. The 159-foot steel beam bridge over the CSX Railroad will be replaced with a 68-foot concrete box beam structure. The other 129-foot bridge over abandoned railroad tracks will be eliminated. Crews will use compacted earth fill to come up to the road level and then pave to continue the roadway.

The estimated contract completion date of the projects on Cemetery and Pavement Roads is November 30, 2012

    Bridge repair costs

Once again - for years the Town Board told tax payers/residents - "Those bridges are safe - just look at the nets under neathe - its the Counties problem - we cant close them, it will impied trucks carrying mainly bulding materials."

Now after years of blame and finger pointing:

"The two bridges on Pavement Road will go out to bid on April 28th of this year. The project will cost an estimated $8.8 million, with 80-percent being paid by the federal government, 15-percent by the state and 5-percent by Erie County. The road will be closed, with a detour in place, while construction is underway"

Working mans translation, "Because they procrastinated so long - it will now cost taxpayers $8.8 MILLION dollars" -

Lancaster should have - could have acted sooner(years ago) - to protect citizens instead of stalling for developers and their friends.

Giza took Kathy Konts to task and turn his back on her over the bridges and also his buddy State Senator Dale V. call everyone crazy because the bridges were safe and the residents had valid points of concern and watch the Board take credit for the bridges repairs sad put true !

When on numerous occasions those despicable, "gadfly" regulars brought before the Lancaster Town Board's the serious disrepair to the Cemetery Road and Pavement Road Bridges, they were told to see their county Legislator as those were county roads and the town had nothing to do with them nor were they responsible for repair costs.

Fudoli and the county should get credit for their repair/replacement/removal.

First you get the bailout money for jobs, then you declare a surplus, then you wait for your right move before elections, then you make the big splash -repair bridges and county roads with it..

Collins is not the only one.. They all do it and they been doing it for years.
Kiss someone that's different. It helps.
Lets get the facts first, then go for the jugular!!
It's all transparent, just read between the lines..

Bridge repair is socialist. If you want the bridges fixed, get out your tools and get to work. That's how we do things in America. Only in communist Europe would they expect the government to fix the roads for them.

Isn't that why we pay taxes, to have the government take care of the infrastructure?

    Who's gonna be the lucky winner ? $ ?

Can't Wait to see what Companies "Win the bids" for these honey pots.

In Lancaster they usually award the contract to a "Competitive" bidder. Then they have to amend the cost two or three times during the actual construction phases to cover "Cost Over Runs" - there always seems to be things that were "Unforeseeable" when putting the original bids together. I believe as long as they approve these under the $10,000.00 mark - no public approval is necessary before they vote to approve the extra payments.
There were a few of these when they built - among other things - the senior center. $9,000.00 here - $10,000.00 there - who's counting????
    Time will tell!

Yeah, but the county is putting these contracts out for bids. If there are change orders that need additional funds, we probably won't even hear about it.
