Erie County motorists can help keep auto registration fees in county coffers rather than let that money wind up in Albany.
County Comptroller Kathy Hochul Friday announced a plan whereby the county will send a stamped envelope to automobile owners who would then register their vehicle via the county rather than the state. Doing so, Hochul claims, could retain some $1.2 million for Erie County. Registration that is completed through the Department of Motor Vehicles results in fees going to the state.
Hochul's office has instituted a "Just Mail It" tab on its Web site -- www.erie.gov/clerk.
Those who do then supply name and address to which the clerk's office will forward the necessary paperwork and a stamped envelop for mailing back to the clerk.
State rules do not allow automobile owners to register vehicles online via the county.
