Why would that question even have to be asked? Of course not. It's not a matter of public safety. It's a sport.
Just raise course fees.
With the Town of Amherst Golf programs loosing between 300 and 500 thousand dollars yearly should the town continue to financially support this program.

The level of recreational facilities and services residents of a town are willing to pay for is up to the residents, and in our system, that is determined by voting majorities.
Maybe Amherst residents are willing to pay for golf courses, baseball fields, soccer fields, and the like as quality of life expense for their community.
This.
The TOA has higher property values and people are willing to pay higher taxes because of these services. To cut them out would be counter productive.
Using the logic, it takes money to make money, what Amherst should do is look into closing the Oakwood Course, purchasing the Westfield Country Club (which I think is or was for sale) and combine it with the Par-3.
The new course could be high enough quality to bring a PGA or LPGA event and it would allow Audubon to be sold for development.
IIRC, there really are not a lot of great public course options in WNY. Having a championship level public course would be a solid selling point for residents and a nice revenue stream for non-residents.

Golf courses are not a priority for those who have lost their jobs or are dealing with smaller pay checks. Why should we finance such a project when the Senecas are losing money on their new course. Golf courses all over the country are losing $$ so what makes you think it's going to pull in big bucks here. There's a recession going on all over and people are making decisions about cutting a lot of things out of their budgets. Believe it or not...it's happening here in Amherst too. Any Town that can't give it's employees any type of rasie for over 4 yrs shouldn't even consider this.
If they did ....we'd go bankrupt because we'd have to give the Asst. Rec/Youth Dept guy even more money. I heard he's going to get youth staff to help at the courses including a social worker. That's probably just gossip but I wouldn't but it past the Stooges we have running the Town now.
Keep up the bike paths that everyone can use instead!!!
Screw the golf courses! Let them go bankrupt!
