Grand Island construction booms since dismissal of Seneca Nation's land claim

Housing growth in the region’s second-ring suburbs like Wheatfield and Lancaster spiked through the mid-1990s, but not on Grand Island. Area homebuilders and town officials blamed the Seneca land claim, which hung like a black cloud over the island.

Now it looks like the cloud is rolling by.

Since the Seneca Nation’s case was dismissed by the U.S. Supreme Court, developers have rediscovered Grand Island, and building permits and home construction have rebounded.

“Commercial and residential development certainly were stymied by the potential of the lawsuit,” Town Councilman Richard W. Crawford Jr. said. “I have seen a stark increase in interest from developers since the land claim ended.”

That includes a pair of large developments that, combined, could add more than 250 new homes to Grand Island in coming years. And building permits are up by almost 25 percent this year, leading some officials to rethink the town’s plans for growth.

People who wonder if the glass is half empty or full miss the point. The glass is refillable.

    It was considered previously ..

Back in 2003, after an environmental review, the Peace Bridge consultants made their decision and recommended against building a bridge crossing on Grand Island.

Ragin's right. I lived there for 22 years and most people on the Island would lay down in the road to block the cars if a bridge was built to Canada. I'm serious!

The last time I was on the Island I noticed huge homes being built on East River Road and on a previously desolate part of Ransom Road. There also seems to be many new homes being built in that subdivision adjoining River Oaks.

With all the new money flowing into town maybe the Island could support a more upscale restaurant. Since Del and Herb's closed quite some time ago all there is on the Island are Fast Food places, pizzarias, crappy diners, and bars for alcoholics. How about something on the water with a nice view, good food, a decent wine menu and cloth table napkins? I'm sure it would do well. Maybe something like Schimshacks up in Sanborn?

There is one restaurant I do enjoy on the Island: The Beach House. That place hasn't changed in 30 years. Same great food, same friendly wait staff and same out of the way only locals know about it location. Great place to take your family for lunch or Dinner.
