Question Medicaid or Civil Servants - who goes first?

In the Buf News today they wrote this:

Partial story excerpt: Click here for full article.

"Public schools and Medicaid, the two biggest cost centers of the government, are likely to be major targets in the governor's upcoming budget.

Since Cuomo took office January 1, union officials have sought to portray a cooperative image. That could come to a crashing end when Cuomo announces layoff intentions.

For the unions, like the Civil Service Employees Association and the Public Employees Federation, a layoff battle with Cuomo comes at a time when they are supposed to begin negotiating new collective bargaining agreements to replace existing contracts that expire March 31.

Cuomo has already said he wants a one-year freeze; he has not been specific about years after that, raising the possibility he could strike a deal for no raises in year one but larger-than-usual raises in the out years of the contracts."

So, who or where will the cuts affect the most? Politicians have as much - if not more to loose - their pay and benefits are tied to Union contracts. They are mostly elected and re-elected by those who are supported by tax dollars.

Medicaid is a benefit mostly to seniors and welfare recipients . Schools already are being choked - whats gonna happen when Governor Cuomo speaks in February?

There are 13.4 million eligible voters in New York state. 4.7 million of them turned out to vote.

There are only 1.2 million state and municipal employees in New York state.

Even if everyone of those employees voted for the exact same candidates, they would be out numbered 3 to 1 by people who "aren't supported by tax dollars."

And what about the 9 million who don't vote? Nothing stopping them from voting. They must enjoy the way things are given their acceptance of it.

    Question Maybe - maybe not

If there are 1.2 million state and municipal workers - they also have family and friends - most of whom vote - your also assuming everyone else who voted didn't vote the way the 1.2 million did - nice try.

By the way you forgot he only needed 179,000 votes +/- to win.

But what was your point anyway - who's gonna take the hit - Medicaid or public servants?

1.2 million state employees have families. Simple as that. If each had 4 people from their family vote including themselves that is 1.2 mill plus 4 X 1,200,000 = 4,800,000 million.

One parent works for the state... wife/hubby both vote... each have parents for the most part and they vote. Done Deal.

So no one else is voting? In which case, what are they bitching about?

Currently $14 billion of the states budget (not the federal share) goes to medicaid... $14.7billion goes to the 200k state employees...

    Both need to be cut.

And the state has 1.296 million full time govt workers... that 1 in 5 people work 'for' the taxpayer.

NY spends 63% more to educate than the national average. Both need to be drastically reduced.

I am sure the excelsior state will excel in the face of difficult decisions and tough choices.

4248... keep in mind that almost 85% of the budget goes directly to people who are union members... education... Medicaid/health care... DOT... police... DOC...

By cutting mediciad you'll be cutting money that goes to millions of SEIU memebers... I love that one union wants to throw another under a bus to save their own ass!

SEIU and the others are a##holes.

They want higher taxes plain and simple. Now Mario jr. is planning on cutting 10,000 state workers. We will see how that goes.
