Why can Government abandon property but a private person can't?

With all the boarded up properties throughout Erie County , ( in fact, throughout the State), why is it that Government can abandon the maintanence of a property that they own, but a private citizen can't do the same thing ?

    Who says they can???

Maybe the next level of gov't does not want to enforce the maintanance of the property, where the local gov't will force the maintanance on the privated people.

I guess the same can be said for roads. Why can Government abandon the maintenance of a road, yet still retain ownership of the road?

Think of it this way. The government is the parents and residents are the government's kids. When a child asks mom or dad why they have to do something but the parents don't, what's the most common parental reply? That's right! "Because we're the parents."

New York has certainly been getting away with allowing (causing) the old Psych Center to fall apart, for the past 30 years. They have done the same with all other State insane facilities.

DUH! I never thought of this. It so obvious.

THINK how our court system would be clogged up by private property owners with property fees & violations + condemned properties if the PRIVATE renters, store & home owners ever constested this in court!

This is just one of thousands of major "double standards" our government (and close friends & family of) gets away with and I guarentee that some Right-wing media windbags have plenty of VAGUE arguments to rationalize why government can let properties go to hell, but private citizens have to pay fines and/or jail time for property violations.

The government lets properties go to hell BECAUSE THEY CAN AND THEY HAVE NO ONE TO ANSWER TO!!!

The media usually spins something in favor of the govt by citing a few historical examples;Exceptions to the rule and turning it into an "established, acceptable fact"

Sure, you can ARGUE as to why corporations usually pay less of a percent of taxes than private citizens
    and
WHY the Republican "trickle down" theory is BS
    and
WHY is the "Federal" Reserve a private business
    and
WHY the government didn't automatically thoroughly investigate the post-9/11 crime scenes or act upon the numerous pre-9/11 detailed terrorist tips

But don't expect any real action or answers from our government, any "Woodward & Bernstein" exposes-Just sit back and enjoy the show.

The government could ALMOST have a toxic waste property next to an elementary school and make up some kind of "legitimate" excuses for it.

Yes, let's all run to the media for the truth!

    Right-Wing spin on your statement:
I can just hear Rush saying,

"You'd have to be insane to re-build these facilities! I mean, several respectable New York State Senators such as _______ and Congressmen like ________ HAVE proposed bills to fix these places up, but the truth is, Folks, that no one really CARES about insane assylums anymore!

In fact, the NIMH or National Institue For Mental Health says that there really aren't that many crazy people in the United States so why should we waste hard-earned tax payer dollars on buildings which for the most part, will go unused?

No, Folks. Any money slated to rebuild nut houses should go towards New York States's infrasturcture! Rebuild some of those dangerous bridges!
And would YOU want a crazy house in YOUR backyard? Dangerous maniacs and perverts just over your fence where they can grab your children? I sure would not! Typical Liberal guilt wanting to help all of these "insane people" that aren't so bad off!"

Yes, and some private businesses have gotten away with the same thing. Look at the old grain elevators as an example. Or even part of the steel mills.

That does not make it legal to do so. If the state is responsible, then go to the feds.

Because when the government condemns and demolishes property, it takes money. And then the same people who complain about the government not doing about the abandoned properties instead start to bitch about how they have to pay taxes for the demolition.
