26 WNY schools hit superior marks in math

Twenty-six Western New York elementary and middle schools posted superior marks on their 2010 statewide math tests, according to a new Business First analysis of results that were released last week.

The study defined a superior performance as any instance where at least half of a school's students attained Level 4 on the New York State Education Department's four-tiered scale. The department says that anybody who reaches Level 4 has exceeded the statewide standards for proficiency in math.

Buffalo's City Honors School and Williamsville's Transit Middle School led the way. Each recorded superior performances on three different math tests:

    • City Honors placed 51.3 percent of its students at Level 4 in Grade 5 math, 64.0 percent in Grade 6, and 63.3 percent in Grade 7.
    • Transit had 56.5 percent at Level 4 for Grade 6 math, 78.3 percent for Grade 7, and 55.9 percent for Grade 8.
