Two bodies found near homes of missing women

I just don't understand why this Henchen guy, the suspect in this case, was out on parole. Do you?

Deputies searching for two missing Southtowns women found two bodies Saturday in a Colden barn.

Deputies late this afternoon had not removed the bodies, which were found in two drums … one cardboard, the other plastic … in a barn on Irish Road, across the road from where a career criminal had been living before his arrest in January.

Geraldine Jackson, 87, of Colden, was last seen Dec. 22, and Nancy G. Phelps, 69, of Marilla, was last seen Jan. 14.

Robert J. Henchen, the main suspect in the disappearance of the two women, has been held since January on $100,000 bail in an unrelated burglary case. Henchen, also of Irish Road, is a career criminal with a history of violent crimes against the elderly.

The bodies were found in a barn owned by Colden Town Justice Carolyn A. Siegel.

Jackson disappeared after her Irish Road home burned down on Dec. 22. Police said there was no evidence of her body in the charred remains of the home.

Phelps was last seen at a Bible study group in Alden, and deputies said there was evidence of foul play at her home, where they found blood in the garage and blood and a tooth outside of the garage.

Similarities between Phelps' disappearance and the Jackson case also have been noted previously. Both were elderly widows and lived alone. In addition, their homes are not far apart.

Henchen is on parole for a Monroe County home-invasion robbery in which a 76-year-old man was bound and covered with a blanket while his house was ransacked, according to media reports from that time.

Henchen's criminal record includes a home invasion in the 1980s, when a 75-year-old man was beaten unconscious and a woman tied up with rope in their Orleans County home. Before his arrest, Henchen was living on a four-acre property across the road and less than two-tenths of a mile from Jackson's home.

Notification of parolees with violent histories?

Maybe there should be public notification when a parolee with a violent history moves into your neighborhood? Something similar to the public notification sent out when a sex offender moves in.....

I don't want to punish a guy who has done his time, but, God Almighty, someone with a history of violent attacks on the elderly moving into an isolated area near elderly people? They were like sitting ducks, those two women.

The condition the barn indicates to me that it's very likely not used. Not to mention, what use would a town justice have for a decrepit old barn anyhow? Other than to store human remains of course.
