Buffalo police draw ire, national attention for protester injury

NEW YORK — Video of a police officer appearing to shove an elderly protester who falls and cracks his head in Buffalo has drawn widespread condemnation.
Video from WFBO showed a Buffalo police officer appearing to push the 75-year-old man who walked up to police clearing Niagara Square around the 8 p.m. curfew Thursday. The man falls straight backward and hits his head on the pavement, with blood leaking out as officers walk past.

Why would the elderly man go up to the officers like that knowing the situation?

Various posters on facebook keep pointing out it was an elderly man. He was. Doesn't mean the guy couldn't have been dangerous.

No idea why the guy would have went up to the group like that.

You really feel that is what happened?

It made no sense why he approached the guys.

If he didn't fall this would have been a complete non issue. You could just tap my grand father the wrong way he would have fell down.

Gee, maybe he's voicing his concern for the state of affairs pursuant to the First Amendment.

You crow all the time about the Second Amendment. Maybe this man is more attuned to the First, especially trying to save life instead of snuffing it out that happens far too much then the whining about the preservation of the Second.

Heck, Mr. Gugino seems like the kind of older American brave enough to go out and demonstrate, as opposed to some of the keyboard tyrants on here spineless as far as hitting the streets. Lee and Mark come to mind in the Lancaster room. Fast with their fury of an America they see slipping away for what I'll call angry white men. Yeah, 'Had Enough Yet,' the Mark and Lee diary of angst and their own little weeping well, gee, had I put 'Had Enough Yet' on the Lancaster thread WNYresident would have moved that to the national section and fast. What does that have to do with Lancaster anyway? LOL

Had you or I, WNYresident, caused someone to fall and hit his head we'd be locked up right away.

Yeah, but keep in mind they shoot to kill people when they could shoot them in the leg.

The police officer should have handled this protester with kid gloves.

If you knew him... you would really not be surprised this happened...just about anti everything. Grasps at just about anything he can to defy the rules. ...to protest.

Or he had a bomb in helmet..you never know. I feel for the guy but I believe he shouldn't have been where he was. It also looks like he stumbled and trips while he was pushed. Just like any other elderly person may have fallen. Don't you think those officers want to go home after their shift and the tension is high? We have "protestors" beating a woman with a 2 X 4. My opinion in this case is both sides were wrong. The officer in the back probably didn't need to push him back and he shouldn't have gotten into the group's space.

You have people on facebook saying. "Look he was returning a riot helmet". Really? When was the last time you happened to just pick up a riot helmet and needed to return it to a group of riot police?

    Drop the BS already.

He could have done that but he didn't. He approach a group of riot police and got into their face. Yes I feel for the guy but you just don't do that at that time.

Yeah, because hitting that giant artery in the leg (femoral) wouldn't kill someone.

Femoral bleed out is about 5-7 minutes.

    Things old men shouldn't do

    Slalum skiing,
    Bull riding
    sleep on a futon
Place themselves in the middle of civil unrest.

The situation was stupid all the way around.
