Hyatt Regency Buffalo to permanently close downtown

Hyatt Regency Buffalo to permanently close downtown

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Hyatt Regency, the largest hotel in downtown Buffalo, is closing its doors for good.

A Hyatt spokesperson tells 7 Eyewitness News the 396-room hotel, which suspended all operations on April 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will no longer be affiliated with Hyatt as of June 1.

"Unfortunately, as Hyatt will no longer be operating the hotel, we've been forced to make the extremely difficult decision to implement layoffs across our hotel workforce," a spokesperson said in a statement. "A priority for us is to ensure our colleagues are being cared for during this situation."

It's never good to see any business close.

Perhaps the downtown renaissance we keep reading about in the shoe shine rag is just another piece of fiction of the type it’s pedaled for 2 generations.

In this case I would say many businesses may have been on the edge. The virus pushed them over the edge.

Well, one thing that happens in crises like these is that the weak companies get weeded out. Of course here the destruction has been by design supervised by people who hate business generally.

In many cases, like the Hyatt and the Buffalo Grand Hotel, the crisis didn’t create the weaknesses. It exposed them and made them worse but it didn’t create them. The City of Buffalo has been rotting for 60 years under Democratic Totalitarian control and no amount of tax money thrown into the pit can stop it. Crises like the current one simply expose the rot and no amount of editorializing by the Buffalo News to the contrary changes it.
