René Jones had enormous shoes to fill. On Dec. 16, 2017, his longtime mentor and colleague Robert Wilmers – an icon in the banking industry – died unexpectedly in New York City. Four days later, Jones was promoted to chairman and CEO of M&T Bank, the 30th-largest bank in the United States with $125.5 billion in assets and more than 17,000 employees across eight states and Washington, D.C.
