Artvoice has a very accurate article regarding the BPD.

In a number of conversations, again anonymous, Buffalo police officers have told Artvoice that they don’t believe the public is on their side.
The public must be a bunch of cop haters.
The difference between taxes and robbery is the mode of coercion.

A "sick out" on St. Patrick's Day? The cops don't "work" on St. Patrick's Day.
It's just a mass beer fest with the cops included....where's that picture you posted last year Noc?

    Here's a telling quote...
“This is not another goon tactic. I know that people have various opinions on the parking ticket blitz, but this isn’t like that.”
no, this is on another level all together.

The artvoice makes Meegan look like a putz and the entire union a bunch of morons.

The way I read it, you boys are waking up from a drunk night. The night before you took it in the as* but have no idea who gave it to you. So your freaking out a little. Kinda funny.

it might be funny to you

but if it was you that was getting screwed over, you would see it different. So be it. I'll continue my own job action till the wage freeze is over, sometimes you get what you pay for. BTW, anybody catch the report on WIVB ? Study out of UB determines Bflo Cops are doin more with less.

I saw the ch 4 piece

It was interesting in that the figures they used were up to 2004. Since then we have lost another 100 guys that haven't been replaced, creating an even larger disparity. Funny how nobody on this board saw it.

How would any of us like it if we were told that we would get annual raises and the raises were not forth coming? I'd be a little PO'd too. I don't blame them for wanting to bang in on St Pat's Day Weekend. I'd be tempted to myself.

Unions breed members who cry over give-backs forever.

They're used to their lax laws like injured on duty and whatever else was in the inflated benefit package you public servants get from whatever politician is in your pocket.

The combination of union and civil service protections allows you to stage your "job actions." You would be fired under normal circumstances.
If the Blue Flu does strike appropriate action should be taken pursuant to Civil Service Law, Article 14, Section 210, Paragraph 2(b)
    (b) Presumption. For purposes of this subdivision an employee who is
absent from work without permission, or who abstains wholly or in part
from the full performance of his duties in his normal manner
    without
permission, on the date or dates when a strike occurs, shall be presumed
to have engaged in such strike on such date or dates.
The penalty prescribed by Paragraph 2(f) should then apply.
    the chief fiscal officer
of the government involved shall deduct from the compensation of each
such public employee an amount equal to twice his daily rate of pay for
    each day
or part thereof that it was determined that he had violated
this subdivision; such rate of pay to be computed as of the time of such
    violation.

That is an inaccurate characterization of the study. Channel 4 had a slanted viewpoint.

The following statement is from the official press release from UB about the study.
Regional Institute Director Kathryn A. Foster notes, however, that Buffalo's higher-than-average violent-crime rate is not necessarily the result of its lower-than-average officer levels.
There are many factors that impact crime which were not part of the report. You can read the whole report here.

Here is the bottom line, yes any public servant who is found to have engaged in a job action will get a penalty under the Taylor law. Additionally I would not be surprised if the city's attorney will be dancing in front of a judge this week to obtain a TRO or preliminary injunction and such employee that is covered by its terms could also face civil and/or criminal contempt of court which would mean additional fines and possible jail time for each employee who is found to have participated directly or indirectly in the job action.

The article in the artvoice was the best article written in a long time. Unlike the buffalo snooze they seem to have published actual quotes and not put a spin on them to try and sell more papers. Well if there is a sick-out or "blue flu" i guess your call will be answered on monday so have fun at the parade and just know you do not have to get up with a hang over to answer the door when the police show up.
