Buffalo is shrinking, Amherst is hot: What the latest census numbers tell us

Despite the mania around downtown living and Buffalo’s urban “revival,” the city continues to lose population to its suburbs, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The 2018 population numbers, which cover cities and towns, show contractions in Western New York’s very largest and very smallest places even as momentum grows in places like Amherst and Clarence. Those findings mirror longtime trends in the region, where the development of Buffalo’s suburbs has far outpaced that of the city itself.

Notably, these figures aren’t the last word on city- and town-level population: The census retroactively adjusts its past estimates each year. (According to this release, for instance, the City of Buffalo had 2,300 fewer people in 2017 than the bureau previously calculated.) Local planners, politicians and curious locals won't get a more definitive picture until after the 2020 census.

I"m surprised that Buffalo is losing population even after the influx of refugees. The rosy picture they paint gives you the idea the City is growing. Which would be a good thing for Erie County.

The usual political BS. Buffalo City leaders/ Politicians trying to make themselves look good...usual self serving rhetoric...know how I can tell they're lying?? they're talking!

The shoe sign rag has spewed crap for years about the millennials flocking to Buffalo, growing the population, filling the apartments, creating the new economy. It was, always has been and always will be a lie. This area is losing population, period. And you won’t redevelop the area by bringing a few hundred bushmen every year. It’s politically correct and a staple of what passes for education today that all the problems in Africa were caused by white colonialists. That’s crap. They were starving to death five thousand years ago just like they are today. And it was native Africans who willingly sold into slavery other native Africans.

Importing large groups of people who right off the bat need to be put on various support programs is not what immigration was 100+ years ago.

I finally understand why people are leaving the area. You get to the point of it's pointless to stay. Too many people with their hands out and too many in "Government" that want to take the net tax payers hard earned money and give it away.

WNY, it’s especially bad here after 50+ years of one party rule. Corruption long ago became the watchword of local government in Buffalo and it spread to the suburbs as even a Democrats fled to the ‘burbs to escape what they had wrought in Buffalo.
