Efforts to expand Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park, the city's newest industrial park, are about to receive a major boost.
The Buffalo Urban Development Corp., last week, received word that it can assume a bid offering for 18-acres of land that neighbors the park. BUDC is expected to pay $350,000 for the land, assuming a bid that was presented by JER Revenue Services LLC to MBBA 2003-1 Trust, which currently holds title to the parcel. BUDC has been attempting to purchase the land for the past few years.
The land most recently was used by Shenango Steel, which left the property more than 15 years ago. Because of its industrial heritage, the land will have to be remediated before it can welcome its first tenant.
The Shenango Steel site is one of three parcels BUDC has either acquired or will be soon purchasing -- all aimed increasing the available acreage around Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park. In the past year, BUDC has closed or, by the end of this month will be closing, on 100 acres of land.
All told, including the Shenango Steel site, Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park may soon have more than 150 acres of land that BUDC, along with other economic development agencies, can market.
Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park, built around the former Union Ship Canal property just off Route 5 that straddles the Buffalo/Lackawanna municipal line, is already home to CertainTeed Corp. and Cobey Inc., who have built out 400,000-squaree-feet of space and brought 350 workers to the once-vacant land.
Also in the works is a $7.5 million park that will actually ring the Union Ship Canal featuring walkways, bridges over the canal and lots of green space. Construction on the park will begin this summer.
