who gets to pick whats in the news?

    I always wondered about that.

If you think about it, the national news isn't very arbitrary. In a country the size of ours with a population the size of ours just about every story could be told again and again and again. Yet, it seems all the major media outlets cling to the same stories.

Want a real eye opener? Google "student expelled bomb threat", "student assaults teacher" , "student attacks teacher", "teacher arrested", "female teacher arrested", "missing child" or " teacher assaults student" or even "school shooting threat", tons of stories across the nation from local news sources. In a country with our population these things are daily occurrences.

Who picks what national stories get play and why do some of them get so sensationalized when others go unnoticed in the national spot light?

Through a series of “yes” and “no” answers to questions asked by defense attorney Ronald Ricci of Woodland Park, Leone admitted in court Monday that the student took her hand and placed it on his genitals during a tutoring session at school on April 26 and that she kept her hand there for her own sexual gratification

Georgia Teacher, Accused Of Having Sex With 7 High School Students

Georgia high school teacher DaNita Wilson was arrested Tuesday after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) launched an inquiry into her conduct.

The married, 32-year-old math teacher is accused of having sex with seven students, according to multiple reports. Wilson is facing at least seven counts of sexual assault, however more charges may be added since the investigation is still in progress.
Stephanie Fletcher, Former Walton, N.Y. Teacher, Accused Of Having Sex With Students During Class Breaks

A former high school biology teacher in Walton, N.Y. is accused of having sex with two 16-year-old students on multiple occasions, including during breaks between classes.

Stephanie Fletcher, 28, was accused on Tuesday of starting up both relationships by sending racy text messages to each student, according to WBNG. She previously resigned from Walton High School.

Both victims told police that Fletcher texted them naked and half-clothed photos of herself, and often performed oral sex on them. The relationships first allegedly became sexual when Fletcher offered to tutor them.
According to an AP study, between 2001 and 2005, 2,570 educators had their teaching credentials revoked, denied, surrendered or sanctioned following allegations of sexual misconduct.

They only make the national news if they are hot looking young women going to bed with teenage boys. TV News reports what it is most familiar with - cheesecake.

Any news item that isn't an obvious national or international topic would need to meet these criteria:

    1. does it boost their viewership

what makes them think it will boost there viewership, anyyone of the teachers in the above articles are just as good looking if not better looking then the one they made such a big deal about. (purtuerno or something?)

Any kid threatening to blow up his/her school is shocking, and believe me I was really shocked to see how often that happens. Why do some make the national headlines and others don't? Any teacher male or female having sex with a 14 yr old is shocking yet only a select few make the Big headlines.

Right now in this country as I type this:

    - 1 Sexual assault happens every 152 seconds

    - 46 murders occurred today

    - Once every two weeks at least a mass killing occurs

The national media reports very little of that.

Who gets to pick and choose and why? Some are easy, like in nogods example, the teacher that looks like a model, but the rest. I really wonder why and how they pick

It's about circulation, sponsors, viewership. If I am a paper that generates revenue on advertising and circulation then I am beholden to my readers and sponsors. Other media is no different.

OK, But again, what makes someone think this or that killing, rape. or mass murder, is any more enticing then another, besides the obvious (very sexy teacher has affair with scrawny student for instance)?

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but when these things, pretty common place statistically, happen it seems ALL the national media jump on it regardless of the political leanings of there staff.

It just seems odd to me when you realize how often these things happen that the national media makes such a production about one specific instances, as if one of the rapes that happen every 2 minutes is somehow shocking and abnormal or that one of the murders that occur everyday is somehow different then the other 45.

    I have no conclusion.

    excerpts from USA today article:
Mass killers target Americans once every two weeks on average, in attacks that range from robberies to horrific public shooting sprees like the massacre Friday of 27 people in Newtown, Conn., a USA TODAY examination found.

Using news accounts and FBI records from 2006 through 2010, the most recent years for which complete records were available:

    - All told, the attacks killed 774 people, including at least 161 young children.

    - A third of mass killings didn't involve guns at all. In 15 incidents, the victims died in a fire. In 20 others, the killer used a knife or a blunt object. When guns were involved, killers were far more likely to use handguns than any other type of weapon.

    - Children are frequently victims. At least 161 who died in mass killings -- roughly one in five -- were 12 and younger.

    - Mass murderers tend to be older than other killers, with an average age of nearly 32 years old. Like all killers, they are overwhelmingly men.

During those five years, more died from migraines and falling out of chairs than were murdered by mass killers, according to death records kept by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Three times as many people perished from sunstroke.

This is like the exclamation point to my post:

Few in U.S. See Guns, Immigration as Nation's Top Problems

PRINCETON, NJ -- Few Americans mention guns or immigration as the most important problems facing the nation today.

The economy still dominates as the top concern, followed by jobs and dissatisfaction with the general way in which Congress and the government work.

    Bottom Line

Despite the relatively intense current focus in Washington on passing new legislation dealing with gun violence and immigration, most Americans do not mention either issue as the nation's top problem. Instead, Americans focus on economic issues and problems with the government as their top concerns.

Yet what do we see national media trumpeting everyday? Its almost surreal IMO. You would think the national media would focus on what the population is most concerned with. But they don't.

What Americans say they are interested in and what they click on in Yahoo News are two different things. Most Americans don't admit to watching pornography but it is an $8B / year business. Americans are obsessed with guns, money and violence for entertainment.

What people consider important vs what people consider fascinating are often two completely separate things though. Someone may logically say that the economy and jobs are much more important than updating gun laws, yet if they had to pick from two TV channels and one was showing footage of carnage or angry people protesting gun laws while the other channel is showing a couple dull talking-heads discussing macro-economic policy, which do you think they will tune in to? The carnage and angry protesters will win out.

Overkill on any topic can also have an impact. Early on during the Iraq war the number of Americans killed was major news every week. After the months rolled on it started becoming back-page news. It's not that people don't think it's important, but they don't necessarily want to tune into that same info day in and day out for years. Modern news has turned into infotainment and if they want to keep viewers (and their advertising income) then they have to balance important news with what people find fascinating/interesting/entertaining.

This is why I still still think it gets down to one key factor: Does it boost their viewership
