Town recreation director seeking public input

The Town of Lancaster Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department is interested in hearing your thoughts and suggestions for improvement.

The department will be holding a public recreation forum at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Lancaster Senior Center, 100 Oxford Avenue.
Bob Giroux, recreation director for the town, said the purpose of the forum is to gather public input on what the residents of Lancaster would like to see in the future as far as recreational programming.

For more information on this event or any other questions about Lancaster Recreation, contact the department at 684-3320.

Heard there was a great turnout at last night's town board meeting. The focus was on the new refuse contract - presentation by Waste Management and public input.

Hope tonight's recreation meeting draws a large crowd as well as the opportunity for the public to have input is openly offered and welcomed.

I also hope thought is given to the need of playing fields - something the town needs and has spoken on getting for year's; where they go through all kinds of promising rhetoric and zilch happens.

Hope Mr. Giroux somehow gets the word out on what was discussed at the meeting and next steps.

“I don’t think people know a lot about us. We’ve put out a summer brochure in May, but I don’t believe it gets out to the people we want it to,” said Giroux. “[Our goal] is just getting us known. The town deserves as much.”

    Spot on!

“There were thoughts of Como Lake Park to sustain the needs of the town, but I need flat green space to work with. There’s nothing there for more playing fields. We have squished a couple in there, but it’s not an ideal place for fields.”

IMHO, a new recreation center would be nice, but cost prohibitive at this time. The priority should be the possibility of a town park of size to accommodate for playing fields. There are no new development neighborhood ‘pocket parks’ being built, the town streets are too busy to play on, and the kids need more fields to accommodate for organized sports.

The town board was hot on purchasing land at four different sites a year ago, even going so far as to apply for grant money. Not a word since. Hopefully, Mr. Giroux, you are able to renew their interest in this project as it is in the best interest for the community as a whole.
