Transit Road: Gateway to traffic hell

The land clearing and grading for the new Delta Sonic project has begun. The site is located adjacent to the Kohl’s Department Store at 4835 Transit Road in the Town of Lancaster.

This site will be located on Transit Road between the intersections of William / Losson Roads and French Road – a near one mile stretch of five-lane state highway, with a daily vehicular count of near 37,000 vehicles, 30 driveways, and no signalization.

Signalization is planned at the Delta Sonic and Jessica Lane intersection after the car wash / service center is in operation and when the GBRNTRC performs a traffic study to ensure one is warranted.

Delta Sonic will share its driveway with Kohl’s when operations begin and when signalization is warranted by the state (NYDOT) and installed.

Shopped at Kohl’s today and was fortunate to make right hand turns to access the store (going north) and making another right to exit the property (going north). Had to wait a few minutes for traffic to ease to make a safe turn. Kohl’s shoppers making left turns to access or exit the property were not so lucky and faced several conflict situations.

When the Delta Sonic opens without a signalized driveway and until the time signalization is found warranted by NYSDOT this will be an area to avoid. The two driveways are only a few hundred feet apart.

And then there is the Transit Road Chick-fil-A project planned for the Cheektowaga side at the intersection of Transit and Losson Roads – fronting Wegmans and across from Target and Wal-Mart. Signalization traffic backups already exist at this intersection. What could possibly go wrong?

    Hey Dan:

I wouldn’t know the answer to that question either.

That said, I have been living off William Street for 26 years and have watched both the town and accommodating traffic grow; that includes the traffic volume on Transit Road from the building of all the commercial properties in that period of time. I travel Transit between William / Losson and French Road several times per week. It is a nasty stretch of road with no signalization in between to break the constant flow of traffic across the road.

The state did widen and improve Transit Road years ago to make it into a commercial corridor. Even before that time I can honestly state that I have never seen a pedestrian attempt to cross Transit except at the signalized intersection of Transit Road and William / Losson and at Transit Road and French Road.

The volume of traffic between these two intersections at peak hour traffic times (now several times a day) has caused many vehicle operators to avoid making left turns out of the 30+ driveways along this stretch of road, instead turning right and blending into traffic to make a U-turn if possible or driving to signalization.

I do hope the state follows through

I hope the state follows through as well, Gorga.

But keep in mind that the town has already appealed to the DOT for signalization approval prior to Delta Sonic operation opening and were told that signalization would be approved only after operation took place and the DOT found signalization was warranted. How that determination would be made has not been made to my knowledge – DOT traffic study?

According to the current NYS DOT Traffic Data Viewer there are 26,773 average daily traffic counts between the William – Losson intersection and French Road intersection, a near one mile stretch of road with over 30 driveway accesses, and with no present signalization in place to address dangerous conflict areas or to provide a break in traffic to allow for safe left hand turns.

26,773 daily traffic counts not knowing when the last GBNRTC traffic study was performed – and where I am sure it took place before the addition of the Chick-Fil -A, McDonalds, Aldi expansion and the addition of several smaller businesses.

Without signalization in place prior to the Delta Sonics opening, the traffic pattern risk, number of conflict points and overall danger to the public in exiting Delta Sonic or the Kohl’s Department Store will be considerable.

Come on DOT, approve the signalization application – now. This is warranted, an obvious need to protect public safety. This not brain surgery!
