Amherst officials deserve pay raise

3/30/2004

Congratulations to Shelly Schratz and her fellow Amherst Council members who supported the pay increase for key town officials. It's about time someone recognized that this is in the best interest of the town.
These positions are not community service jobs. Amherst has a population of more than 100,000 people. In order to attract high-quality people to these challenging leadership positions that are so vital to the health of Amherst, these jobs must pay a commensurate salary. This decision is a move in the right direction. Sometimes you've got to spend money to save money.

Anyone who questions whether these pay raises are justified should take the time to attend a Town Board meeting, spend a day in Amherst Town Court or shadow the highway superintendent for a day.
