I would have rather seen it tranquilized and moved.
Always fun to second guess...
APD's decision... good or bad? Also, how unilateral do you think the decision really was?

"A determination was made by the officers on scene that the bear was a danger to the public due to its proximity to residences. The bear was euthanized by officers on scene," police said in a statement.

WHERE was the DEC...the bear sightings have been ongoing for nearly 2 weeks...they could have given the Amherst cops a tranquilizer rifle,,, if they did not have one..instead of trigger happy cops lethally shooting a bear for no reason..not like it was attacking someone ..and more likely a few minutes for the tranquilizer to work. Poor judgement and another black eye for the idiotic goings on in Amherst!
Wasn't this Bear injured?
Let me articulate this for you:
"I'm not locked in here with them. They're locked in here with me!!"

Yeah, I agree. It’s always a good idea to let an injured wild animal wander around residential neighborhoods. And the police definitely shouldn’t have been proactive. Much better to wait until the animal is in the process of actually attacking someone. While it’s “only” a black bear and not a grizzly it’s still a potenetially dangerous injured wild animal. As for DEC, the town would’ve gotten far more support had it reported an injured frog in a wetland. Not that DEC would care about the frog but the word “ wetland” would’ve shaken the institution to its foundations. If it had been a deer eating the flowers of some entitled whiner from that part of town people would’ve demanded some action.
innocent bear gets killed because it might be a danger, yet a level 3 sex offender removes his ankle monitor and attempts to kidnap a little kid and he'll get to live even though he's a proven danger
Vote for freedom, not political parties.
Politicians need to cut spending
In other areas, they do tranquilize.

B & B show yesterday was actually informative and had a guy who is knowledgeable about wildlife in wny, not sure if he was with dec. explained how more sightings of bears in suburbs may occur due to habitat increasing ( yes forested lands surrounding allegany forest are growing) no sanctuaries anywhere close therefore few options on what to due with a wayward bear. transportation not easy as bears have issues with hot weather and being transported , ie will overheat and die anyways. If you want an informative discussion on this, listen to bauelre show yesterday, if you want everyone’s. 2 cents and half assed ideas then experts on this site or Facebook are the way to go
While there may be some truth to your comment...a more aggressive approach to trapping, tranquilizing the bear would have been a more humane action...rather than just shooting...and without consulting or cooperation from the DEC....which should have had a more active presence in this fiasco. It lingered on for 3 weeks ..so this should come as no emergency surprise to law enforcement or DEC!
With all due respect to the compassion of these people, neither of these places is close to the size of Amherst with its potential for dangerous human/animal encounters. Nor does it appear that either of the bears in the other cases had been making routine visits to residential neighborhoods for weeks. Maybe what’s needed is a “community organization” to address these issues. I suggest we call it Bear Lives Matter.
