Anyone here work in social services?

There is a gentleman who is losing his apartment who is 61 years old. His mother passed away in 2006 and I believe she helped him along. He seems to have a slight mental disability but is very curtious and well mannered. Apparently all he had as close family was his mom.

He's being evicted at the end of this month (1/31/07) because the landlord got sited for violations in the apartment he has been renting in the elmwood area. The landlord now wants him out.

I know about this because in the summer he stops by to see if there are any odd jobs he can do like cleaning the windows or picking up the papers in the parking lot.

He doesn't know what to do and asked for help today. He told me he recieves SSI and get's a check for heap once a year.

You can tell he's starting to get nervious because he doesn't know what to do and it's cold in buffalo when your homeless.

I don't know what to do with him and would like to know if there's any where I can direct him to.

    Pm me.

Have him call emergency services of Social Services. It would be best for someone to speak for him if he's not used to this kind of thing.
If I can think of something more I'll post.

Through urban housing/catholic charities... this person now has an apartment.

I helped him move some stuff last weekend and today. He didn't have much to move really.

Kitchen table, 2 tv's, 1 lamp and just loose stuff. One really bad living room chair.

I would like to scrounge him up some furniture. He doesn't have a bedroom set/mattress, clean couch/chair anything really. He needs curtains too.

So anyone have any extra furniture laying around they can part with?

Nice work Rez. You are quite the social worker yourself. Give St. Vincent DePaul a call. They helped a friend of mine who was in need. They have funds for such things and are usually glad to help.

If he gets SSI he's doing better than many homeless. They're not going to let him starve or freeze. Instead of asking if any of us work for social services, how about he goes down there where all the social service workers are. He's not going to be homeless and
    this is not the depression.

I can't. Morning is my favorite part of the day
early afternoon is my least favorite.

This guy will be fine. Send him to my place if he's cold.

He's a little slow. Doesn't know what to do...

I also really don't like welfare period. If there are people in the community that can help they should. People who can't afford to help shouldn't have to and thats one reason I do not care for giveaway programs paid for by taxes to the extent we have in NYS.

You know if everyone just helped one person in general we could probally get rid of a lot of the social programs that are draining our taxes.

Here stevenco.. This is who I'm talking about. I've known him for 16 years. What is weird is about 1/2 of the pictures I took he came out transparent. I know it's an exposure thing but it's creepy.

    Central Referral Services

There is a good online social services directory sponsored by the United Way. You simply enter Erie or Niagara County and the type of assistance you need. The directory will then bring up listings of agencies that provide housing, shelter, food, etc. It also has listings for non "social service" types of resources such as where to find small business info, etc.

I'm just here to make people laugh. And to confuse people. Oh, and to irritate people.

    You're helping ghosts, now?
He looks no different than what you see downtown on a daily basis.
If you want to help him, by all means do. By doing so you'll be helping yourself more than him.

I see a civil servant job in his future. Who knows, maybe if he doesn't mind lowering his standards, he could be a Buffalo cop.

You don't have to be a civil servant to help people. I have found volunteers are usually more productive than paid government employees. There are some excellent government employees I know in social services so don't think I'm painting them all with the same brush, I'm not.
