A raise is a reward for doing a great job

Thanks to the Citizens Salary Review Commission, four "public servants" are one step closer to being the recipients of a 40 percent pay raise. The committee chairman reasoned that although the raise issue is not popular, these elected county officials haven't had a raise since 1996 and deserve to be "properly compensated."
Now call us naive, but a person doesn't become a "public servant" to get rich. If the county executive, the comptroller, the sheriff and the county clerk were unhappy with their wages then, like people in the private sector, they had the option to find other more lucrative employment.

Buffalo does need to attract the best and the brightest in all areas, including government, but those who make the choice to serve must also be the best and the brightest. A raise is a reward for doing a good job, not just for showing up the majority of the time. At a time when county employees are facing wage freezes and the possibility of layoffs, shouldn't all of these officials be declining any raises, as Nancy Naples has said she will do?

Amen!! Unfortunately, the County Executive, the Sheriff and the County Clerk don't have the moral character of our County Comptroller!
Think you can trust the government?
