Community advocate and political candidate Roger Heymanowski dies
    by BRYAN JACKSON
    Editor

Roger Heymanowski, a U.S. Army Vietnam combat veteran who ran for political office several times in Cheektowaga and became an active community advocate, died Saturday. He was 72.

Don Friedrich, the Cheektowaga Republican Committee chairman, met Heymanowski, a Cheektowaga resident and registered Conservative, who often ran on Republican lines, through town politics and came to know him as a selfless and canny political operator.

“He would do whatever was needed ... come to a parade, put out lawn signs, and anything political-wise. He was pretty savvy because he’d played this game a long time, so he knew a lot of the ... ins and outs,” he said.

The Republican Committee will miss Heymanowski’s insight and affable personality, Friedrich said, but more important than Heymanowski’s political activities was his community engagement.

“Roger’s going to leave a big hole in this community, if you ask me. ... Roger did a lot with veterans’ affairs, recently holding a job fair for veterans, so he was very active in the community,” he said. “He’ll be greatly missed.”

Additionally, Heymanowski was a strong ambassador for the local Polish community. According to Brian Rusk, president of the General Pulaski Association Inc., Heymanowski chaired the organization’s pageant multiple times about two decades ago.

“He was the emcee. He always had a tuxedo. He encouraged these young ladies to compete and to win, and he motivated them and was always very kind,” Rusk said. “He loved his Polish heritage.”

Rusk added that Heymanowski participated in dozens of Pulaski Day parades and for years hosted a Polish-American television show. He said Heymanowski’s death would leave a substantial void in the community.

“He was a giver; he wasn’t a taker. He never asked for anything of the Polish community; he only gave,” Rusk said. “He gave hundreds of hours of his time, at no compensation, because he loved his Polish-American roots.”

Nelson Oldfield, a former commander of the American Legion’s Erie County Committee, remembered Heymanowski as a talented advocate for veterans, an avid golfer and a man known to arrive at Legion-sponsored fish frys in his sports car.

“Every time I saw him, though, he had the classic vehicle: It was always a Corvette,” Oldfield said.

That’s not surprising, as Friedrich, who became closer with Heymanowski on a personal level over the years, recalled him as a “collector of things.” The two bonded over a shared interest in antique radios, and at one time, Heymanowski had a cellar full of them, before his collection dwindled. That didn’t stop Friedrich, who belongs to a local radio hobbyist club, from checking out the ones left.

“By the time I got over there, he just had a few left, and actually, I bought four radios off of Roger probably just like three or four months ago. … Through politics, I found someone else who collects radios,” Friedrich said. “Once we both discovered we both collected radios ... it really worked out. He had a couple unique antique radios that we made a deal [and] everyone was happy.”

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara (nee Kostrzewski); a son, Erik; two daughters, Monica and Melissa; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan 4, at the Melvin J. Sliwinski Funeral Home, 85 George Urban Boulevard, between Harlem Road and Genesee Street. A funeral service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass at Infant of Prague Church, 921 Cleveland Drive, west of Beach Road.
