West Seneca residents outraged over proposed 12 percent tax hike

WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Hundreds of people who live in the Town of West Seneca were outraged Monday night at a public hearing.

Supervisor Sheila Meegan is proposing a $40 million budget that includes a 12 percent tax hike. Meegan says the increase is due to rising health care costs, workers comp and recycling and garbage.

“All those items affect the budget and it’s unfortunate that the budget is where it is,” said Meegan.

“Eighty percent of our budget is mandated costs, we only have 20 percent to work with and that’s an absorbent amount of money,” said Meegan.

Senior citizens say they’re already stressed by the high taxes, while other homeowners say they simply can’t afford the increase. If this is approved, some say they’ll have to move out of West Seneca.
Remove the mandates and remove the people from office that placed these mandates on our community.

“Where do they think people are going to get the money from, we all pay our own heath insurance, I don’t want to pay mine and someone else’s health insurance,” said a concerned resident.
They don't care about you as long as they get theirs.

Residents say the board isn’t looking out for it’s residents.
This is true of many town boards.

The board is holding another public hearing on Monday, October 30 at 6 pm at the Senior Center, but the location could be moved because of the large turnout Monday night.
THis would be something interesting to go to. Who's seats are up this coming November?

Because of Taylor Law, there is no way around getting a better deal for the taxpayers. The taxpayers are stuck with a pro-employee contract. Why would they re-negotiate the current deal for a less favorable one?

Is this why we are seeing ads saying to vote no on a state convention?

It's all old people there because the young ones don't get involved, they just sit in their parents basements and play games or go out to breweries and act like another pale ale is the greatest thing on earth

I think a lot of people believe "government" at all levels is working in our best interest. If you keep up with what is going on you can clearly see that is false.

It's 30+ years to late to do anything !!! Their's next to nothing in private investment in Erie County for decades says it all. Get out while you can still get some value for your properties before the rug is pulled before your feet. Ask yourself what do you see in Erie County's future ?

It's called Proganda aka Fake News, LOL They have been saying that for over 15 or 20 years and they also have been saying that the area is always adding jobs and the cost of living is so low. LOL LOL Yet WNY keeps lossing population every single year and there is NO Private investment or no real Jobs . Everyone I know who sold their house in WNY had to reduce there price over & over to sell it aka get rid of it.

I have seen homes sell for more than I believe they are worth. Once client who just moved in said they know they paid more than they should but they are able to swing the payments.

I didn't bring up anything about taxes.

I don't consider it wise to purchase something based off the payment without considering what the final payout was.

Reducing your home price because you want to sell ASAP or because you or your realtor overpriced it doesn't null the fact that Home sales are not slumping here and the prices are higher then they have ever been for most sales. Then the town jacks up our assessments and the poor people buying these houses get sticker shock when the mortgage company resets because the home was assessed less then what they paid and /or there were tax exemptions for the previous owners. Sure people are leaving but those that plan to stay are buying houses and paying more for them...a lot more then 5-10yrs ago.
