Thumbs up Favorite town park or recreational facility

I just love the Heritage trail. Wish that I would have used it years ago.
After losing 45 pounds, I needed a way to maintain the loss and still be
able to eat my 4 Hershey bars and a bowl or two of chocolate ice cream a day.
(I gave up smoking 8.5 years ago after 40 years of 1.5 to 2 packs a day. I can't give up everything. )

Only walk it on my days off but try to do two 5 mile trips on those days - one morning and one afternoon. Even yesterday, with all the rain, I got them both in. Carried an umbrella for the afternoon gig, in case it rained again.

The parks department does a GREAT job keeping everything mowed nicely along the sides of the trail. The people who use it are very respectful of the property. You very rarely see anyone's trash or dog doo-doo on the trail. The trail is a GREAT asset to the community.

I've attended my grandsons' baseball games at Westwood, years ago but want to check out their trail when they close the Heritage trail for hunting season.

Never attended anything at Walden pond since my granddaughter was never interested in baseball or haven't really been to other parks except walking my dog a few times through Meadowlea

Anyone else have a favorite venue?

gorja, you looked great when I saw you what a couple of weeks ago...Keep up the good work. I agree, that Heritage Trail is an asset to the town, I wish that the trial was completed through Alden. What a great path for bike riding too.

I found that it's best to walk the trail later in the day, earlier it's buggy. So we take our walks directly to the Westwood trail. Westwood is very nice too, I love the pond and winding pathways.

Danny and his team do a good job, his focus has been on the Heritage Trail because it has been a bit neglected. Mark Lubera did start the project I believe it was last spring and Danny pushed it to fruition. My only pet peeve is those islands that once were filled with beautiful flowers are now weeds. they should either remove them or plant trees or grass it.

Thanks shortie. I saw the cutest little fox family yesterday morning. I will check out the Westwood trail. Most of the islands are weedwhacked down now. Maybe they'll use some weedkiller and just put mulch over them.

Besides the bicyclists, i also see the roller bladers having a good workout on the trail.

Yes, Mr Amatura and Mr Lubera's people do a good job. They do have a lot of acreage to cover with the 4 parks, Heritage trail and all those subdivision entrances.

I don't know that the town is responsible for subdivision islands. The subdivision I lived in as a kid had a homeowners association that took care of it because the town turned it over. At least that's what their annual solicitation letter said.

Not all subdivisions have homeowner's associations. Sorry, I should have said all those subdivision entrances that the parks department is responsible for maintaining.

That's kind of what my question was, which ones are they responsible for and why just those? The HOA I mentioned wasn't an "official" HOA, it was purely voluntary.

I want to like heritage trail, but there are way too many road crossings. Cars come flying over the hills on approach to the bike path crossing. Best case would have been if it progressed out to darien lake and the waterfront in the opposite direction.

I honestly do not know which entrances they are responsible for. They wouldn't be responsible for the subdivision (condo) types which have HOAs.

I will email and see if I can get an answer.

I bike thru the Senior Center a lot. I like what I see there with pickleball courts, bocce, and horseshoe pits. Look like a fun place for seniors to keep active.....

Do they keep active? How many seniors do you see as you bike thru?

Good for you Gorja! Keep it up! I recently started becoming more "fit". Its an uphill battle after three kids, but I am trying. I also agree that the town takes good care of the Heritage Trail. I walk and sometimes bike, usually 3-4 times per week and I am very happy with it's upkeep. I really have nothing negative to say about the recreation, highway or Village public works departments. Shorty, I also agree with you that it would be great if Lancaster could expand the trail in to Alden.

It certainly is an uphill battle after 65. Wish I would have done it 10 or 15 years ago.
Doesn't the Heritage trail end at the town line of Lancaster/Alden? It would be nice for the bikers, if the Town of Alden expanded the trail.

Yes, they are a very busy crew and what many residents fail to realize the close relationship that exists between Highway Superintendent Dan Amatura and Recreation and Parks Crew Chief Mark Lubera that leads to sharing workers and services to ensure the mowing you referred to takes place, park equipment/shelters/etc. and public buildings are maintained, drainage ditch cleaning now occurs on a regular schedule, and all else is in good condition.

As to the list of mowed areas you listed:

All the ponds listed as Retention Ponds (wet ponds) are Detention Ponds (dry ponds except for rain and snowmelt events)

    Check means ‘checked off’

Entrance ways, circles, cul-de-sacs are spaces where the Town and developer made an agreement to accept such green space from the developer and to handle its maintenance.

The town no longer accepts retention ponds for storm water collection and is in the process of eliminating cul-de-sac construction from site plan petitions

Thank you Lee for getting a clarification
