Particularly as people tend to drink more when they're depressed.

And thinking about Buffalo's economic prospects certainly is depressing.

John Kerry is elitist tool who could lead a group out of a one way tunnel with a map and tour guide.
Two suggested corrections: "elitist fool" and "could not lead a group"

Well, thanks... Being the statistic junkie that I am, and how I use them all of the time at my job, I can tell you that the mean annual salary for ALL of the workers in Buffalo and Niagara Falls evens out to $36,010 a year.

I was joking the other day with my "clients" that it seems like no matter how much or how little education you have in WNY, you will be making somewhere between 30 and 35 thousand a year... Whether you have a two year degree, a four year degree or a master's degree... My previous job required people to have a master's degree and they paid people about 31 thousand a year... (Of course that is entry level.) There are many jobs out there, especially in the social sciences, that require a bachelor's or master's degree and only pay about 30 something.

That's another thing we were just discussing at my job. At the beginning of last year the New York State Department of Labor's Workforce and Industry Data released their list of the jobs with the most expected hiring in Western New York at the time. At the beginning of last year BARTENDERS were at the top of the "jobs most in demand." But in retrospect I think the opening of the casinos might have had something to do with it.

Bartenders are no longer listed as in demand jobs in WNY right now. Here is the current list:

Not to give you a fat head, my dear, but I printed your post off and gave it to our youngest as she trotted back to college.

As to degrees, it matters more what it's in and not how many one has.

    IMNSHO, of course.

I couldn't see how to get the "top five" stuff you were talking about.

It did warm my heart to see that "Accountant" was at the top of every permutation!! Pays well, too.

That was what I was was afraid of. I really makes me not want to come back since I make well above that figure in my present job.

I forgot to mention something earlier today when you two were having this exchange:
The cost of consumer goods decreased significantly. So a person could afford a big screen TV and IPOD even if they lacked health insurance.
No matter what you want to think, Health Insurance is a perk. Secondly, you can insure a family of 4 for under $200 a month. The problem is our generations feeling of entitlement.
Were you two aware that company-paid health was a ploy to circumvent WWII wage and price controls and recruit more workers? Dreamed up by Henry Kaiser, builder of the Liberty ships that helped win the war.

Kaiser Permanente is today one of the largest HMOs on the West Coast.

BTW-$200 a month seems awfully low by WNY standards. Is that something that is catastrophic coverage only?

I pay about $260 per month for what includes 80% of the cost for out of network specialists. I can't complain.

Steven just started a thread on Giambra trying to build more ECC buildings downtown.

That'd qualify on both early points on this thread: a magic/silver bullet and he's not proposing to utilize any existing buildings for this.

He keeps pushing to increase the ECC presence downtown, at the same time the Buffalo schools population continues to plummet.

Doesn't seem to make sense on a variety of fronts.

What does ECC have to do with Buffalo public school population
Americans don't solve social problems...they just move away from them

As a component of the feeder population.

Try going here http://www.labor.state.ny.us/workfor...app=descriptor and sorting by "openings" or other criteria.

It's interesting but when you search by jobs with the most openings CASHIERS are at the top of the list... Which makes sense because when you look at Economic Census data the largest number of establishements in Erie county is RETAIL. (But it is like that for most areas.) But the last Economic Census done in 2002 listed "manufacturing" as the industry with the largest number of employees... I think that with even the recent years' closings of the few remaining WNY factories that figure will change.

Bringing up back to the idea of "entry level jobs."
