2018 has seen something like 3 times the number of black bears euthanized by DEC compared to 2017. So much for the notion that only Amherst police shoot bears. Interestingly, DEC is largely abandoning its bear relocation effort because it has proven ineffective in preventing bears from returning to their previous locales.
