Independent Cheektowaga Candidate for Town Board Secures Spot on November Ballot
Cheektowaga, New York - Dan Kollander, an independent, non-partisan candidate, advocate for the people, submitted his nominating petitions with 1898 signatures to the Erie County Board of Elections (ECBOE) on 5/27/2025 in his bid to secure himself and his party a ballot spot in an already crowded race for Cheektowaga town council member. On Friday May 30, 2025 Kollander accepted the People 4 Change party nomination. As a political newcomer, Kollander aims to unite voters across the political spectrum who want fresh ideas and independent leadership. He will be running under "People 4 Change".
Over the past six weeks, Kollander and his very small contingent of volunteers gathered 1,898 signatures from registered voters, including Democrats, Republicans, Working Families, Conservative, Libertarian, Independent, and unaffiliated, "Blank" voters, in the community. As an independent candidate, Kollander is required by the Board of Elections to gather a minimum of 1500 verified signatures, as compared to 500 for Democrat and Republican candidates. From April 15 to May 26, Kollander personally collected 1,027 of the 1898 total signatures signaling strong support for his "message of change" in the community. In comparison the Democrats and Republicans combined had less than 1450 signatures.
"I'm running to give voters a real choice-one that isn't bound by party politics, but a commitment to increased fiscal responsibility and an end to wasteful spending," said Kollander. "I'm pro-taxpayer and understand that without property owners' funding, the Town doesn't exist. My goal is to bring common-sense solutions to the Town Board."
"My campaign found no shortage of registered voters willing to sign my petition, just a shortage of volunteers to collect them", continued Kollander. "With the odds stacked against us, our team of seven worked tirelessly to get past this monumental hurdle of collecting almost 2,000 signatures because the people of Cheektowaga want change!"
Kollander, a long-time Cheektowaga resident, is a retired ASE Certified Master Automobile technician. As a self-employed business owner for the past 21 years, Kollander has offered maintenance and repair services to the community, such as for computers, appliances, lawnmowers, and boat motors/outdrives, tech support and more. He also has experience as a professional motorsports photographer and graphic artist as the former Official track photographer for Lancaster Speedway/Dragway and Wyoming County International Speedway with a lifelong passion for racecars. Kollander and his wife have been married for 36 years with 2 daughters, family, and friends throughout Western New York.
Kollander is a problem-solver with excellent troubleshooting and technical skills and the ability to learn, adapt, and grow. Ten years ago, Kollander began speaking during the Town Board's public comment period about practical solutions and cost-saving ideas. From 2016 to 2019, Kollander served as a volunteer member of the Cheektowaga Budget Advisory Committee (CBAC) during the committee's four-year existence. In 2018, Kollander established the Facebook group, "Concerns of the Cheektowaga Taxpayers" and is currently a founder or administrator for over a dozen other Facebook groups. 10 years ago, Kollander and the CBAC proposed the Town hire a comptroller to oversee the financial operations and accounting of the $92 million-dollar budget, this idea was finally acted upon in 2025. During the pandemic, Kollander was first person to livestream a Town Board meeting from his personal phone and Facebook account which led to the Town streaming public meetings on YouTube. Kollander has advocated for the town board to take comments from the live stream and read them during the Public comment periods. Kollander has also successfully challenged the Cheektowaga Board of Assessment Review for his property, as well as for his neighbor.
The campaign is preparing for a busy summer of community engagement, speaking with voters, and building support for Kollander and People 4 Change. To learn more or to get involved, follow "Dan Kollander for Town Board 2025" on Facebook or email [email protected].
