In theater, Anton Chekhov is one of those iconic figures although there are those who are willing to sling mud.
Much of his work is supposed to be comic although itís easy to not see humor.
ďThe SeagullĒ is a tangled story revolving around: Guess what?
Aaron Posnerís ďStupid Fucking BirdĒ is a spinoff, moving the story to today on the shore of a tourist lake.
Itís an old house, with a shifting array of permanent, short-term and visiting residents, built around the ineffective playwright Con (Connor Graham) who is angry with his mother, Emma (Diane DiBernardo) because of her relationship with the successful commercial writer Trigorin (Thomas LaChiusa) and in love with Nina (Emily Yancey).
Thereís also his friend Dev (Rick Lattimer) who is desperately in love with Mash (Candice Kogut) who is desperately in love with Con.
Okay, so far?
Thatís it, romantic fools who canít let themselves move on, except for Trig who manages to write no matter how tangled his private life is (and in this posse, itís tangled.).
You canít get involved with most of these people because itís fun to involve yourself from the seats for a truly good or truly bad character.
Here, most arenít either.
Except, maybe, for Con who is watching his life wither away because he has no gray sections of his mind.
Instead heís desperately Manichean.
There are a couple of strong performances in ďBird,Ē Graham, LaChiusa and Yancey.
Thomas and ART impresario Matthew LaChiusa contributed a strong and workable set.
There was a pretty millennial audience the night I saw the show although someone right behind me didnít seem to know anything about Chekhov.
You donít have to have seen ďThe SeagullĒ when you see ďStupid Fucking Bird,Ē although it might help you make sense of a somewhat incomprehensible plot, which seemed completely comprehensible to the youngish audience.
Maybe thatís why should see it, to better understand the psyche of those on the other side of the age parallel.
