Buffalo N.Y. (February 15, 2017) – After closing the books, the Buffalo Zoo is proud to announce that 538,100 visitors streamed through the admission gates in 2016, which is 52,000 more than in 2015.

With the birth of many new animals, including the first African Lion cubs born in some twenty-five years, the Zoo was a must-see destination in Western New York in 2016. Continued interest in the new Arctic Edge exhibit, better-than-expected weather, and revamped marketing initiatives collectively contributed to the Zoo’s overall attendance. This is the highest attendance for the Zoo since 1987 when visitation reached 545,800. “2016 was a great year for the Zoo” said President and CEO Donna Fernandes, Ph.D “We were very excited to announce our many animal births with the community. I’d like to thank our incredibly dedicated staff and all those Zoo visitors for making this a milestone year.”

Even in this new year, many exciting happenings have taken place. So far the Zoo has held a public debut of its male polar bear Sakari, introduction and naming contest for a baby ocelot, and celebrated Valentine’s weekend with the polar bears first date. The Buffalo Zoo is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Grounds remain open for one hour after admission gates close. Zoo guests are reminded that admission to the Zoo is just $5 every day through the end of February as part of the Zoo’s Polar Bear Days winter promotion.
