Lancaster Board of Education Special Meeting
By Joe Maciejewski
Dec 30, 2008, 10:49
On Monday January 5, 2009 at 7pm in the district office board room, the Lancaster Board of Education will host a special meeting to discuss Governor David Paterson’s 2009 proposed budget and mid year cuts to the 2008 budget.
At that meeting the fiscal impact to the Lancaster School District will be presented and discussion will follow. As one of seven board trustees, you elected me to act in your best interest and that of our Students, Faculty and Support Staff.
You also elected me to make tough decisions that are fiscally responsible, to comb through the budget and carefully review, spending and revenues and ensure that your tax dollars are spent on providing a quality education.
In my three years on the board, my colleagues and I have implored those of you with a vested interest in the Lancaster Schools to provide ideas on what you want your budget to look like.
What are you willing to pay for? What can we do without? Tough questions need to be asked in tough economic times.
School real property taxes total over 50% of your total property taxes, yet we hear very little from the public. I want to hear from you, how do you want me to spend your tax dollars.
Cuts will have to be made, the issue is how to be responsible with those cuts, such that the quality of education that we are used to continues, and that the Lancaster School test scores continue to exceed New York State education standards.
Our greatest assets are the minds of your Children and mine, they are the future, and the time has come to consider alternatives to funding for education, other than the real property tax, please attend and bring your ideas!

Parent and Lancaster Board of Education Trustee
