This year marks Mrs. T’s Pierogies second annual search for the Capital of the Pierogy Pocket. Cities, towns and non-profit organizations throughout the region were invited to provide a demonstration of their citizens’ “pierogy pride” and to challenge Buffalo, N.Y. – last year’s winner – for the coveted title.

The winning city, town or organization will be officially declared the Capital of the Pierogy Pocket in early November 2007 and will be awarded $10,000 for a community endeavor of their choice.

The choice is now in the hands of the voters. This year, the stakes are high as upstate neighbors, Buffalo and Lancaster, rival each other and three others for the title – Binghamton, NY, Clifton, NJ and Whiting, IN.

Finalists’ entries include a letter from presidential hopeful, Senator Hillary Clinton; two pierogy petitions boasting over 2,500 signatures; four pierogy proclamations; and, hundreds of pierogy-making volunteers.

Lancaster is not going down without a fight. By submitting a pierogy petition, a public recognition of Lancaster as the “East Coast Capital of the Pierogi Pocket” and a video tour of Lancaster’s Eastern European influences, Lancaster is proof that there’s more pierogy pride upstate than just Buffalo.

If named Capital of the Pierogy Pocket, Lancaster will use the prize money to draw more tourists to the area by creating new downtown venues and hosting additional events with the Polish Heritage Dancers.

Evidence of the finalists’ love of pierogies is posted at www.pierogypocket.com, where individuals across the country can now vote for the place they’d like to see crowned Capital of the Pierogy Pocket.

Voting will be open October 3, 2007 and will run through October 23, 2007.

Anyone around the country can vote once each day.
