Although the council member race has not been declared official, I would like to extend my congratulations to all Lancaster candidates, winners and losers, for taking the high road in their campaign efforts.

At Monday evening’s Lancaster Town Board work session, Supervisor Robert Giza brought to the attention of the board members and a few attendees the anger felt concerning the salacious rumors and innuendos appearing on the Internet, in the media and passed about in public.

A small gathering of taxpayers attended the Lancaster Town Board’s public hearing on the tentative 2010 budget. Only three individuals spoke on a budget that had recently been cited as a topic of resident concern by the two incumbent Democratic council members out on the campaign trail.

I am seeking your support for a seat on the Lancaster Town Council. As a former School and Town Board member I know how important it is for elected officials to “listen” and “respect” residents and to address their concerns. We must return accountability; integrity and credibility back to the board.

Residents who are considering voting for incumbent Lancaster Town Board Council Members this year have good reason to ponder change. For years, the entrenched single party (Democratic) Town Board has acted in such manner that many residents are of the opinion that the board is more accountable to developers, special interest groups and town employees than for the best interests of the community it was elected to serve.

I just received a campaign mailer from the endorsed Democratic Party council member candidates telling me of all the wonderful things they have done for town residents during their terms as council members. They failed to mention how many times their ears became deaf when residents approached them on personal issues.

Families all across the Lancaster community have had to make sacrifices and try to do more with less. Whether it’s the seniors who will not receive Social Security increases for two years, the young families whose breadwinners have had their weekly hours and/or wages cut or workers who have found that their workplaces have downsized, their workloads have drastically increased.

Boston Globe Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Ellen Goodman recently wrote on President Obama requesting Congress allocate $250 to the 57 million beneficiaries of Social Security and other federal entitlement programs, regardless of income to compensate for the fact that older Americans will not get a cost-of-living increase in their 2010 checks.
