    Cheektowaga police investigate dog attack

Cheektowaga Police are looking for the owner of a tan pit bull who bit a nine year old boy Wednesday night at Cheektowaga Town Park. “If she'd have not been in the park with the dog, the boy would have been ok,” explained Cheektowaga Police Assistant Chief Jim Speyer.

According to authorities, the nine year old was near the basketball courts when the attack happened. He had his hand through the fence when the dog over powered its owner and bit off part of the child's finger. “A Good Samaritan was there in the park and took the boy home and they took him to the hospital. The part of the finger that was taken off was located and taken to the hospital but they were unable to reattach the finger,” Speyer said.

I wonder if the police as the kids who play at that part who's mom it was. I think it was said her child was there.

I hope the parents or others don't make it out that it's horrible to lose part of a finger to the kid. Over the years I have known many people who have lost more than just a finger and do quite well.

    Any thoughts on this?
take your own risk when you go to a dog park. never go to a fenced dog park to many crazy dogs and owners and who pays when your dog gets hurt in a fight.? Ask any good dog trainer
they dont recommend it. go to a dog day care your safer.. i put mine in a day care never had a problem, most dont like to pay for it so they go to the free parks.

I've been thinking that since I got my dog a few years ago. I travel to the Amherst Paw Park. It's nice there, but it's a hassel driving a half hour there and back. I live near the area where the old orphanage was on William Street. If the fences were secure and a section of that large field portioned off, I think it would make a good spot for a dog park in Cheektowaga.

The dog walking law for town parks is poorly written. The police believe the law limits dog walking to the area directly west of the Alexander Community Center, but the actual law suggest that the paths north of the Alexander Center (including those along the creek all the way to the bridge) are also open to dog walking. Moreover, the map posted at that town's website shows those paths in red along with the paths that are directly west. The law specifically prohibits walking on paths that are east of the Rec Center parking lot, but doesn't prohibit walking dogs on the paths that are north of the parking lot.

However, today a police officer told me that they had a recent meeting following the dog bite incident and they were told dog walking on the paths north of the rec center parking lot was not allowed. When I told him about the ambiguity in the law and the online map at the town's website he responded "well, that isn't going to make my job any easier."

Was that at 2600 William St? If so, DIPIZIO CONST CO INC owns it.

So unless a group of people were to buy the orphanage that would is off the table.

Best avenue would be a small area in one of the town own parks but the group would have to have dedicated volunteers for it's upkeep.

Another idea is to review what other people have done.

Does the town already have groups dedicated to dogs?

Step one in my opinion before any more time is wasted on this is to form a group who would want to tackle this project.

Have a meeting of this group or groups and see if there is a need. If people can drive 5 minutes to another local dog park what is the point? People are not leaving our town because of the lack of a dog park. They are leaving our town because of how the Cheektowaga Democratic Party has ran our town for the last 30 years driving up our property taxes. A dog park might be something that attracts people to the town. A small group should then scribble up a mission statement. Basically a small "doggy plan" on what the park should be and have. In that plan have a solid idea for a budget.
