After more than 10 years??
YOU must have been an outstanding employee and gratefully survived on your wage for at least 10 years and gave back any increases you received during that time. Huh?
Spend a day at one of the inner city schools and experience the easy day teachers have trying to maintain civility so that those who want to learn can. BTW..be prepared to get your a&% beat should you look the wrong way at a student or try to break up a fight between students.
The reason the BFT has not gotten a new deal in 10 years is due to their own choices. Simply put; the way NYS labor law works, without a deal the previous deal and terms live on. The terms of the previous deal are better for teachers than what their new deal will have. So they drag this out and play the victim card. Idiots like yourself propagate this lie and people who can't be bothered to learn the facts buy it.
Applying to become a Buffalo teacher is a choice. Sometimes it's the only choice after a teacher can't get a job in better school districts in the area. But it's still a choice.

Oh, there are probably a few people highly talented teachers who wanted the challenge of teaching in a city school system, or who turned out to be highly talented even though no suburban district recognized their talents, but the overwhelming majority of teachers would rather be in a suburban district and end up in Buffalo only because they didn't get a job in a suburban district.
So when Rumor complains that suburban teachers make more than BPS teachers, there is a good economic reason for that - if BPS paid more, then the best teachers would flock to BPS instead of first trying to get a job in a suburban district. Rumor has to face the fact that he represents the second and third string of the teaching profession. If the union didn't require that all players get the same pay, then the better teachers who ended up in the BPS could be compensated like their equals in the suburban districts.
Of course, in the suburban districts we have the opposite problem - not every hire turns out as expected, but the slugs that are on board get to eat the same gourmet meal as the highly talented for the same inane reasons.

Before teachers come to work in Buffalo, it has to be made clear that Buffalo's special education enrollment is far higher than surrounding areas meaning that those dollars are going to go to those students which will, in effect, depress the overall salaries. How are you going to define a "better teacher"? You can't even define failure and success with graduation rates. Suburban teachers rely on the fact that their students are going to get good enough scores on Regents exams to carry them. On more than one occasion I've had to explain content to my suburban peers. Not that I care, but your assessment is largely wrong. 1. No, there are not more than a few. 99% of the teachers in BPS tried to get a job elsewhere or knew that their poor academic record precluded them from evening trying to get a job elsewhere.
2. There isn't a credible educator in the United States who would class the BPS graduation rate as anything but a failure, except maybe the slugs teaching in the BPS.
3. As long as BPS teachers keep blaming the students for the teacher's incompetence there will be no improvement.
If you can't get a job teaching regent's qualified students, and you don't have the skills to teach non-regent's qualified students, the honorable thing to do is find another profession rather than take a paycheck for teaching non-regent's qualified students - a job for which you are incompetent - instead of taking the job and then blaming the failed graduation rates on the students.
But then again, that type of idiotic thinking is why you didn't get a job in a suburban district in the first place.
Fixed It.
If they myth that Genoobie likes to project was actually true, Rumore wouldn't still be the head of the teachers union. He continues to win elections and thus anyone in the union needs to accept the view that this reality brings.
There are ways to address the number of special education students. There are ways to address the lack of parental involvement. There are ways to address violence in the BPS. But these issues would need to be put front and center in order for them to be resolved. They aren't.
What's put front and center, year after year, is teachers compensation. If teachers really put the kids first, they would put the needs of the kids first. But as a collective whole they don't and that's why will not see an improvement until this changes.

I can't think of the name but there is a group that is actively importing refugees into Buffalo NY. Does that add any cost to the Buffalo school district because of the language barriers? Does the language barrier some how interfere with the basic education of the kids that are born in the USA and speak English?
Are they also importing refugees who are teachers that can speak the languages that are required?
