    Simple Question - Why?

Okay, so now NYS is cutting any funding to zoos and aquariums.

When 9/11 hit - police, fire and education were the first to be cut/reduced.

Arts and culturals have also borne the brunt of the funding machete.

And, people ask why we have higher crime and juvenile issues.

When programs we had as youngsters, that provided education and a better view of life overall are cut, we should expect these backlash results.

The question is why? Why Especially when we elect these dudes and dudettes that are sworn to protect the public good for now and future generations, these are the first cuts in budgets when they know what the results will be.

It's a good question and our representatives must answer it.
or maybe you have another reason for asking the tough question?

    Why,, you ask,

the answer is rather simple, and I will answer with a question,

Why would the diabolical machine of NY cut back on pensions, the expensive legislature, duplicitous government etc. when you can choke the perks out of the citizenry?

Why do you think funding was cut? I'm not going to go thru the touble of researching all of it, but I think we fund things better today than we ever have in the past.

Example: After 9/11, Homeland Security was handing out money to local suburban fire companies like it was going out of style! My fire company had so much money they put a nice monument up on the front lawn that cost $100,000 + !!!!!! Police departments were getting a lot of money as well for command centers and such. And I don't think area's like Tonawanda and Marilla are hotbeds for terrorism!

As for education, we spend more than any state in country, how much more money do you want????

As for culturals, let them survive on their own! WE ARE OVERTAXED! I don't know what you're expecting from us????

Lastly, it's not my job to raise your kids! If you think it takes a village move to another one, because this one's broke!!!! There's plenty in this area we pay for to entertain your kids! We got playgrounds, baseball diamonds, ice rinks, parks and libraries coming out the ying-yang! Figure it out! Just leave my wallet out of it!

    Well said. As usual.
    Thank you for the clarification.

But WHY did we (forgot what jurisdiction) have to BEG the Dept. Of Homeland "Security (YA!! HEIL!!!) for extra money for border security one or two years ago?

Not sure if there is a statistical correlation between amount/level of education and dropout rate
    and
    types of crime and levels

But all that money you mentioned-All that money that you KNOW was wasted-Would love to see an itemized listing of post 9/11 misguided funding and did the City Of Buffalo get a lot of post 9/11 $$ or was it just...

Enough, you took the words out of my mouth.

I don't want to go to the damn zoo, aquarium, philharmonic, Bills game, or art gallery, why am I forced to pay for them? Let the people who enjoy patronizing those things pay for the full cost of sustaining them.

The idea that cutting funding to any of the above contributes to increased crime and juvenile "issues" is simply absurd. The mentality that we need programs because they keep kids on the right path contributes to the problem by taking the responsibility off of the parents.

I went to the zoo and aquarium once each in my life. They were so damn boring that I'm not surprised they need to be subsidized by the taxpayer, because I don't think anyone would want to shell out much for the experience. And, as far as educating youngsters, you can learn a lot more about animals from a book than a zoo or aquarium.

The simple answer is....... That they know by cutting in these areas people will feel like it is they're duty to let them raise taxes to have these things.

They will never cut they're perks and priviledges to save you the taxpayer a dime!
Even Dictators have to respect the will of the pawns, for without their obedience, they have no power at all!

I tried Googling where the money is going, didn't see a ton of itemized info...

Here's one link dated 9/25/08 outlining the Town of Tonawanda getting a $175,000 grant for a command center

    http://www.security.state.ny.us/ohs_...8_0926_EOC.pdf

I do know Surfing was picking up some "chatter" on his baby monitor that someone was looking to blow up the Paddock Golf Dome!!!

Here's a link from Patterson dated July, 2008. He's all happy because Homeland Security gave him $241 million!

    http://www.ny.gov/governor/press/press_0725084.html

It does say which regions are getting money but it doesn't say specifically which municipalities are getting the money.

    Here's another link I found.....

New York Waits, Upstate Is Fed Security Pork

    by Ben Smith

This year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security bought Edward Koorse a new Ford pickup truck.

If terrorists attack somewhere near Cattaraugus County, where Mr. Koorse is the director of emergency services, he will use the $27,000 truck to haul a huge trailer full of the decontamination equipment that the state bought him last year. But that scenario doesnŐt seem very likely in the quiet farmland of southwestern New York State.

So in the meantime, Mr. Koorse uses the pickup to drive to work.....

NY state doesn't cut fundings; people-"our" elected representatives do. What this have to do with you? Why are you concerned?

For as long as I can remember, during any fiscal crisis, it is the culturals that get cut first. Why? Because we, as a whole, do not see them as anything but "extra." SADLY, this is the mentality...in order to appreciate the value of the institutions that give our kids: hope, esteem, and quality of life, we first have to loose them.

What cultural programs existed in the 1920's and 1930's? Those decades seemed to provide upstanding citizens without major government subsidization... why must we always rely on the government?

If your theory is correct how come property values aren't up in area's where these tremendous institutions are? You'd think if they're in demand people would be clamoring to live within proximity to them???

I don't hear the kids in my neighborhood begging their parents to take them to the zoo, science center, Albright Knox or Burchfield Penney!
