teachers do not need cpr/first aid training? Did you realize this?

Isnt that the oddest thing you ever heard? I never thought much about it until I was renewing my cpr last night and two friends of mine joined me who are teachers - I said, are you kidding me?? Both of you dont have to be certified to teach? "No, it is recommended, but not mandated" - THATS CRAP!

I will do everything in my power to get this changed - this is ridiculous. I think the nurse and the physical education teachers have to have it? Well guess what? If my kid collapses and cant breath or has no pulse, I am surely not willing to wait until the nurse or pe teacher gets there..... and if a teacher did give cpr they would fall under the good samaritian law, so its really a no brainer - the only ppl held accountable or could be sued is someone being paid to administar this - a nurse, doctor emt etc

and a defibrillator? omg thats even easier to administar than cpr - how often is the battery checked at your school? where is it located? this is amazing to me......

I just wanted you all to know that have kids in schools whats going on....

Elementary has to take it, not middle or high school. atleast 4 years ago..

You can be sued for for practicing medicine without a license, we are not even allowed to put a bandaid on a child, we can hand it to them they can have a friend put it on or they can do it but we can not put it on.

sport coaches usually have to take it.

I din't know rendering first-aid is practicing medicine? Are you not protected by the good Samaritan law? So long as you do not go beyond any training you have had.
Don't practice a tracheotomy unless you've been trained.

The fact that teachers are not required is interesting to say the least.
I wouldn't hire a baby sitter unless they have had red cross cpr and first aid training.

I guess it should not be surprising. Teachers are not subject to pre-hire and random drug testing as well as basic first aid. These should be requirements for all teachers at every level. College included.

Not sure about the GSL, I was told there has been law suits before in NYS. I do agree we should be trained i am not against that, i am all for drug testing I do not do that stuff i barely drink so i have no issues for that. I do agree, thing is people think it is the teachers, most of us agree we should have this training it is the districts and NYS that tells us no..

    That is sad.
I do not believe teachers would do intential harm. In fact for most it would be very much the opposite.

Not true. There is no NYS mandate that teachers learn this.

I agree that it should be mandated. I was a lifeguard for several years. I also teach in Buffalo, where some schools have no nurses.
It's scary to me to think that if something happened....there would be no one to help.

At one point, I was the only one in a school of 500 qualified to use the defibrillator.

    spoken like a true non-parent

and to answer your question yes, kids do - the boy Ryan Markel was in a swimming pool with 22 other kids with 1 adult - he had a heart condition and wasnt noticed in the pool going under - they went to get the defribllator - it had never been unpacked out of its shipment box and was in a locker - he's dead, ask his mother that question.......next time she goes to the cemetary to visit her son, she'll ask him what he thinks.

and guess what? if it saves only one - its worth it..that one, may be a relative of yours.

what about choking? first aid? none of it is mandated - sorry, I think it's a huge deal.

There was no one. I was the only one trained, and it was by chance from being a lifeguard.

Lifeguards are required to be trained in that now, too.

Ultimately, I'm not as concerned about the AED, just because they are fairly user friendly. Ultimately, If you get the paddles on the kid somewhere, and let the system do its job, it will be better than nothing.

It's the CPR that I'm concerned about.

People that are CPR certified are covered under the Good Samaritan law as well.
First Amendment rights are like muscles, if you don't exercise them they will atrophy.
