I don't know of any NYS workers who have to be ashamed to accept their paychecks , they provide needed services , they don't sell a product , but lay them off , & you'd notice they're gone..........also they have to qualify with an exam , they're very tough exams , I know of college grads who routinely fail them as they don't know how to do the job they're taking an exan for............Every job posting exam that mesue listed is quite easily ubderstood , & they're needed postions , look at the titles , no "fluff there , the fluff comes from directors & asst. directors , deputy commissioner , & commissioners , political offices , their pork barrel dreams , etc. It's not the civil servants who are the drain on this country or state , it's mostly the rest...........shame you guys probably couldn't qualify for any of these jobs

I just finished vomiting and I feel a little better now,,,,,so

Winnie,, In NY there are far too many civil servants,, so many that we top the list.

We need some civil servants, but in the purpose of government here is not to employ people. We could do with a lot less,, afterall how do all the other states manage?

Government as you know is the biggest employer in this area. Government is made up of ... well....... people..

We have too much government,, we don't want it.. we dont need it.

where in my post (#6) states that I said we need more civil servants ? where did you read that I EVER wrote that ? I know gov't is bloated , esp. at the top , it gets thin where the people do the real work in the trenches , the clerical , etc. Way too many chiefs , too many red-tape jobs , elected officials (& their aides) , cross-over services , etc. , too few indians...........

    Syl,

NYS Civil Service is not a joke. It was developed to include protections for both the employees and the employers. Sure.. there is always room for modifications. I agree with winnie that the government employees are not the problems. Government, not NYS Civil Service, decides what services "they" feel are needed. That's where the problem lies. They dictate what programs "we" need. Then they develop it, budget it and decide how many employees will be needed. Then NYS Civil Service is contacted to find out what titles do the function they are looking for and the postings for the tests go up, people take them and the employer gets to choose one of the top 3 willing to accept the job.

Yes, go throw up. We don't need firemen, or police, or accountants, or nurses, or engineers. We need whatever YOU do for a living.

nice post smiley , I'm afraid syl still doesn't understand , mesue's link to civil service exams is easy enough to understand , but some in this MB think they're ALL unessessary jobs & some probably are & won't be filled , they're "put" into the budjet & the job filling is "kept open" in the budjet by funding it with $1.00 just in case it needs to be filled if someone retires or dies , or is promoted , etc.

You're right, people that don't understand the system see a major issue. They don't realize that these are the titles and exams that apply statewide for all state facilities, County, City, Town's and Villages. They are not exclusive to just one entity. When a full timer in Some State facilities retire, they split the line and fill it with 2 part timers, not in all situations, but some of them. All in all, the exams are tuff. I always said that there are 3 answers for the civil service exams, the right answers, the wrong answers and then there is the answer that the State is looking for.

This is an old gag I posted years ago, but here ya go:

Misinterpretations of Civil Service job titles:

Stationary Engineer: One who designs greeting cards or
an engineer who is absolutely, positively NOT ALLOWED
    TO MOVE.

Keyboard Specialist: A member of a Civil Service new
wave band or someone who is completely, positively an
EXPERT on the computer keyboard... As in, "Hey Larry,
I can't find the semicolon on my computer's
keyboard..." "Well, go ask Helen. After all, she IS a
    keyboard SPECIALIST!"

Occupational Therapist: One who counsels those who are
    unhappy with their jobs.

Senior Plant Manager: One who assists the elderly with
the upkeep of their hanging ferns and philodendrons.

Stores Clerk: What? Is this a Civil Service job or are
    you working retail?

Budget Assistant: An assistant that you don't have to
    pay a lot.

Bureau Chief: The guy in charge of the large pieces of
    furniture.

Zoning Inspector: An inspector who's a little tired
and his eyes are glazed over.

Clerk of the Works: Well, come on now. This just
    sounds like a self-appointed, quasi-important title.
"I'm not just a clerk, I hereby annoint myself the
    'Clerk of the Works!'"

Director of Adult Services: Well, well, well... We
know where this is going. *Wink, wink.*

Farm Aide: A Civil Service job title that often gets
    confused with a benefit concert.

Library Treasurer: Someone who really, really loves libraries.
I'm just here to make people laugh. And to confuse people. Oh, and to irritate people.
