    $90 an hour, outrageous

Former Depew Police Captain Mark Mediak retires after 29 years on the job and comes back to work a a consultant for $90 an hour. Yes, it is for only five months, and he is limited to 16 hours of work per week, and he is needed to break in the newly elected Captain to learn the newly retired police Chief's job (which is another soap opera story), but hey that's a healthy part time fee in anyones profession.

Beats the hell out of what new full time workers get at the Chevy plant ($14/hr), substitute teachers and even full time teachers. It's amazing how governments can piss our money away.

$90/hr is not a bad rate for consulting IMO.

At first, I thought Holy **** $90. an hour. But with no police chief salary at the moment and inexperienced people in the captain and lieutenants positions that $28,800 for 5 months of consulting didn't really sound that bad, IMHO.

From what I've read, he only gets $90 an hour, no extra bennies no added pension... Not a bad deal.

I am surprised/amazed that some of you feel $90/hr for a police captain to get in consulting pay is reasonable, especially considering he and the police chief left the Village in the situation they are in and receive a healthy pension fully paid for by the taxpayer.

It is my understanding that the Village force is also down several officers. It would appear the department was mismanaged.

You should look at Albany, they are paying someone $125k a MONTH as a consultant!

Again, this is like paying him $45 an hour plus benenfits... which is less than what they'd get as a full time employee! Dont' get me wrong, I think it's crazy, but it is what it is!

Sorry for the intrusion (I don't live in Sloan), but I thought this was an interesting thread and I have a question.
I'm sure I must be missing some important bits of information, but isn't one of the priorities of a Dept head to be sure someone can take their place in the event of the proverbial being run over by a bus scenario? Why would you pay someone a nice consulting fee to come back and do a job that should have been done while they were in office? I'd be much more concerned with the why than the how much.

A guy came and fixed my spa for a half hour service call and charged me $90. Plumber came and cleaned my sewer line ....$200 . I do think your right though, Captains and Lt's usually do all the real work anyway they should be ready to assume the role.

If I got my facts straight, the Depew police Captain Mediak retired in June after 29 years with the department. Less than a month later, the Depew Police Chief retired via a letter while on vacation before anyone was appointed to replace the captain.

Under these circumstances, maybe they needed someone with the know-how of the chief's duties on board until the new captain is trained or a new chief is appointed.
