Hold WSNHS accountable for momentum continuing

On the WS, a critical piece of 'keeping the momentum going' is holding West Side Neighborhood Housing Service (WSNHS) accountable for cost-beneficial use of their approximately $730K administrative budget & 7(?) staff to fulfill their mission started over 25 years ago "to stop decline of the WS".

They have too often been part of the problem instead of part of the solution. Indeed, two WSNHS-rehabbed houses on Mass Ave are currently vacant & derelict.

Was WSNHS anywhere to be seen in this massive endeavor?

Their annual meeting is next Thursday, November 19, 6 PM at 372 Connecticut, across from their offices at 359 Connecticut.

Anybody concerned about making the WS a better place should attend & lobby for reform of a longtime unproductive agency

I was speaking of continuing the work throughout the city's other blighted areas. Someone asked what it would take to keep the momentum going to use this as a model (or something to that effect).

Powell family has a happy homecoming

For anybody concerned about massive blight in 100's of poor Bflo neighborhoods, the departure of the TV cameras is just the beginning of the next chapter.

How to continue the exciting momentum & better harness the $10's of millions of 'poverty housing funds' pouring annually thru Bflo to make things better in other neighborhoods?

Powell family has a happy homecoming

By Jay Rey, News Staff Reporter
Updated: November 14, 2009, 5:55 PM /

Delores Powell and her four children saw their new home on Massachusetts Avenue for the first time this afternoon, as "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" wrapped up its weeklong stay in Buffalo.

The Powells were greeted by a few-thousand neighbors and fans of the television show, who have been following the construction of the new Powell home at 228 Massachusetts Ave. on the city's West Side.

"It's a fun event," said Tim Sherry, of Lancaster, who came to watch the moment with his daughter, Alexandra. "My daughter watches the show all the time."

The Powell family — who spent the week in Walt Disney World while their new home was being built — pulled up in a limousine at about 4:10 p.m. Saturday, when they were greeted by Ty Pennington, and the rest of the cast of the show.

In usual "Extreme Makeover" fashion, a large luxury bus was parked in front of the home, blocking the family's view of their new house.

The enthusiastic crowd — many of them volunteers who helped build the home and work on related neighborhood projects this week — began chanting, "Move that bus! Move that bus!"

After a couple practice takes for the cameras, the bus finally moved, giving the stunned and jubilant Powell family the first glimpse of the house.

HA! Yeah. I (along with umpteen hundreds of others) stood there for, what, six hours... in unbelievably fantabulous weather. Very sad to see at least three people get taken out on stretchers after collapsing from standing & heat. Oh, and how many times did Ty Pennington change his shirt? Sheesh! heh. I was very sad that I didn't get to meet the blonde EHMO chick.

Congrats to all the folks that helped make this happen. Good luck.

The real secret of volunteerism is doing for oneself. If you aren't willing to keep your own block clean and neat, you certainly cannot expect others to come in a few times per decade and do it for you.

I never watch tv.. but the past 3 weeks I have watched the EMHO show to see what its all about..tonights show was about a family that lived on a sheep farm..The Mother had leukemia and the gentlemen who donated his marrow and saved her life whom she never met came to help the family because their house was terribly damaged in an electrical fire and the family has been living in a small trailer.Who wouldnt want to help this family? It was truly inspirational to watch people who have so little and still happy because their Mom was still with them.
