Brewer puts name to BuffaloBusiness First of Buffalo - by James Fink Business First

Labatt USA is calling Buffalo home - and the brewer wants all the world to know what city hosts its corporate headquarters,

As new bottles and cans of Labatt-made products move into grocery stores and other outlets around the U.S., they will come with the following phrase: "Brewed in Canada. Labatt USA, Buffalo, N.Y."

"It says Labatt is still made in Canada, as it has been for the past 160 years, but it's U.S. headquarters is Buffalo, N.Y.," said Glen Walter, Labatt USA president. "If you buy a case of Labatt in Florida or anywhere else, it is going say Buffalo, N.Y., on it."

What that means is Buffalo's presence as Labatt's U.S. corporate headquarters will be on an estimated 21 million cases of beer sold annually by the Canadian brewery and on all radio and print advertising campaigns the beer maker undertakes in the country. For Buffalo, it is another marketing coup.

"It says we have business here and that's good for our image," said Richard Geiger, Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau president and chief executive officer. "It helps get our name out there."

Previous Labatt products and advertising campaigns mentioned the company's former U.S. headquarters in Norwalk, Conn.

The label change has already begun on such products as John Labatt Classic and Labatt Genuine Honey Lager. Coming soon will be new labels for such popular brands as Labatt Blue and Labatt Blue Light. Labatt will be kicking off the "Buffalo" campaign during its annual meeting of beer distributors and marketing groups that takes place at various downtown locations on Feb. 6 and 7. The meeting is normally held in such warm weather locations as Las Vegas and Orlando.

Labatt, one of Canada's top beer brewers, makes its various products at one of seven Canadian plants.

Labatt has approximately 25 percent of the Buffalo beer-drinking market, Walter said. Buffalo is the largest Labatt U.S. market in terms of beer consumption.

Buffalo's loyalty to Labatt, coupled with its proximity to the company's Toronto headquarters helped sway the brewer last year to move its U.S. corporate headquarters from Connecticut to the Key Center at Fountain Plaza complex in downtown Buffalo.

Labatt has 24 executives headquartered in Buffalo including 12 that were hired in the past year.

Having Labatt's in BUF is great. AND they moved here 'all by themselves'. No one had to woo them here and no tax breaks or anything like that. The chamber of commerce had egg on their face in that they had nothing to do with the move here

That's a piss poor attutude even for you.

If 100 small companies with 24 employees each moved to WNY that would be 2400 jobs at the cost of $0 per job. Now compare that to the lame deals the local IDA's put togeather were some jobs cost $10,000's each in incentives.

That's right, rez. Any amount of jobs that come to WNY that aren't initiated by incentives should be applauded. $0 taxpayer funded is good.
