    Disoriented in Buffalo

First of all, I have a good sense of direction. I've been in Buffalo for 32 years starting at the Main Street Campus. When I travel on Main Street, I always have "felt" like I was moving east or west instead of north or south. Do you know what I mean? I live in the suburbs now and I don't feel disoriented at all. Transit runs north and south. Broadway runs east and west... no problem.
Main, Delaware, Elmwood "feel" like east-west roads to me.

Sorry, but you have no sense of direction if you think Elmwood and Delaware are anything but North/South !! Main Street is another story - it starts mostly N/S at the River, but gradually turns East as you travel ...

I'm a map geek, btw - so I might be brutal in my sense-of-direction judgements!

I know exactly what you mean! Main St ends at the river and the river is to the west, therefore you get the feeling Main st runs east and west. I always had a problem with that, so you are not alone.

I agree forest, Elmwood & Delaware are definitely north/south, Main is strange, NE to totally east towards Rochester or really Syracuse/Albany, etc.

I think that Main, Delaware an Elmwood are parallel for awhile, and that is what throuws me off. I am a map geek also and I understand the direction intellectually, I'm just telling you how it feels.

There are only two areas in WNY that mess me up direction-wise -- Main Street (in the City,) and Southwestern Boulevard.

Southwestern confuses me, because Transit RD runs N/S, and it turns in Southwestern, which then runs E/W.

I have no problem with roads the keep the same direction. Elmwood, Delaware, Transit... no problem.

It's the ones that change direction that mess me up. EGGERT just ****s up my brain. Also Niagara Falls Blvd (once you're past the shopping district) used to mess me up too.

You are easily confused, Grasshoppa ... or have limited experience driving anywhere that roads/streets aren't straight lines. Having grown up in the country and driven many a mile on winding country roads, major city/suburban roads and streets are never a problem for me since they are much straighter than most rural roads.

BTW, why is it important to "know" that you are going EAST, WEST, NORTH or SOUTH? Do you have an on-board compass in your car that's distracting you or is it the "Route 5 East" signs on Main Street that do it? Since Main Street is US Route 5 and goes from the PA border east all the way to the MA border, it's labelled "East/West" because that's its general direction across the country (or across as much of the country as it goes) even though in a particular area, it may very well go north/south.

The only time I worry about direction is if I'm trying to get from Point A to Point B in an area I'm not familiar with. Then I kinda want to be going in the general direction that will get me to Point B.

    Linda:
I don't have a car with a compass, although I've always wanted one. I rely on Kind of an "internal" compass and it generally serves me well. I just think knowing your orientation is important on a very basic level. I don't know how to respond to your inquiry about why it is so important to know what direction you're going. I would think someone like you, travelling country roads, would think an acute sense of direction would be important. Anyway, from previous reponses, at least a couple of others know what I'm talking about. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me, you know?

What messes me up is that I work downtown, and 'south Buffalo' can best be seen from the east windows.

If you're worried about direction, consider that you go WEST to go to Canada ...

I got over that a long time ago.

However, when I first moved here I lived on Grand Island (River Rd). I still want no part of trying to figure out which direction is which over there!

Exactly! you go south to the foot of main street, then turn left to get to the old first ward and south buffalo. It's disorienting. I understand it logically, but not instinctively.

Crane your neck further and you get to see the East side.

But, you're right, South is the hills of Springville.
