Camillo's Sloan Market I tired of smelling rotting meat!

Well lets hope the Sloan board does something to stop the owner of Camillo's Sloan Market from doing whatever the hell he wants!

I've lived next to this store all my life, and never had a problem with the previous owners. Now that it is under new ownership, it is a living hell for the neighbors living nearby.

We had to put up with high volume of traffic including tractor trailers at all hours of the day, litter from inconsiderate slob customers that throw their garbage everywhere, car fumes, customers and employees turning their cars around our driveway while our daughter are playing outside, moron customers that instead of using their brakes, plow into the makeshift crap guardrail to stop their car, one of which went broke through and damaged MY fence.(this is the same fence I asked the ower to pay half for after one of his customers destroyed our chain link....would you believe he told us he couldnt afford it!)

Well he reached a new low.
He moved his dumpsters less than 10 feet from our daughters swingset!

The oder of rotting rancid meat and chicken carcasses baking in the hot sun is horrendous! Not to mention the bees that hovering around the dumpster...as soon as the kids went out to play, they were being attacked.

We have complained to village numerous times just as the other neighbors have. NOTHING HAPPENS! The ower does whatever the hell he wants to! Well tonight we went down and complainedr rather loudly to the "code enforcer".
Lets actually see if something changes.

You would think that this small business owner would try to be a good neighbor.....he is laughing at us all the way to the bank...

    Any creative suggestions????

PS please dont tell us to move.We were there LONG before Camillo ever took over.

First you need to build your case to win popular support.

Secondly can you take digital pictures of this dumpster and damage to your fence?

I think photo's of rotting fly covered meat would hit the spot to

There have been numerous written complaints and meeting with village officials in the past. Most of which are about the tractor trailer traffic and the wholesaleing he is doing out the back door which he will not admit to. Apparently he does not even have the proper business permits.

Up until now I have been pretty quiet. I have written letters to the board complaining about the liter, dumpsters ,and traffic. Recently, Camillo cryed to his lawyer who intern sent a letter to the village saying something along the lines that the village is picking on him. I have tons of pictures of dumpsters left open, garbage piled up around them. I have called the erie county health department who I guess came out and investigated........knowing how things operate around here, the guy probably left with free package of meat! I've heard he has an "in" with the county.
He can certainly afford to pay people off.

You would think with all the money they make, they would have the common decenccy try to be good neighbors.

He had these dumpsters about 20ft from our property before and the slightest breeze on a warm summer day sent the smell of decaying meat into our backyard, patio and into the open windows in the house. Summer nights are unbearable, having to keep all our windows closed. 80 degrees and no AC, and we are forced to keep our windows closed...This week he moved the dumpsters right up against our property and enclosed them in a cheap makeshift fence that the village apparently approved.

Aside from complaints to the village, who else can we complain to. I'm ready to take matters in my own hands and someohow make life uncomfortable for customers that don't respect our neighborhood.

Its at 494 Reiman ST in Sloan...

My next door neighbor also gets the oders from the dumpsters but we get the brunt of it. It all depends on which way the wind blows. We couldnt use our patio at all this year.
Neighbors on the other side of the store have other problems which are even worse. Tractor trailers are lined up on the side street for deliveries. They leave their trucks running...block residents driveways and won't move...and one neighbor had her carbon monoxide detector go off from the truck fumes. It is suppose to be a little mom and pop type store just as it has always been back when my parents owned the house. never a single complaint before. It is quite popular now and people from all over WNY come to it.....Its great that a small business owner is doing well in the area, but unfortunatley its at the neighbors expense. Property values around the store have dropped.
The people that live around the store have been there long before this other guy took over, many of whom are elderly and built there houses.....they should not have to put up with this.

Ive had my assesment dropped twice already..... I'll do it again! But it just costs the rest of the taxpayers more....
The real answer is for him to move...but he has a goldmine....at the end of the day he jumps in his luxury SUV and just drives away from all of our problems.....no conscience I guess...I suppose money will do that.

I understand that there will always be problems living next to a store, but the least they can do is try to make life a bit more tolerable for us. One simple solution, for the dumpsters atleast, is move them against his building, not up against my property...that would be a good start. I'm sure he can afford it. If you have ever been in the store, you'd know what I mean.

Go to the Building Inspector's office, ask to see a copy of the Zoning Ordinance Handbook and map. Look to see how he's zoned.
Most likely, he's zoned some form of commercial, and you're residential.
Look in the book under his zoning. Look to see what the side-yard setbacks are (he's next-door to you, I assume, not behind you?)
There must be some sort of ordinance for placement of dumpsters, i.e. they have to be X amount of feet from the side and rear property lines. There may be a further ordinance, if the neighboring property is zoned residential.
Also, look to see if the ordinance book mentions noxious fumes.
Build a case against him. Don't rely on the crap about his customers, that will just make you look foolish. Weren't the customers always there under previous owners?

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

PS Rats are a buzz item right now. Wouldn't hurt your case if you mention how you've started to see rats.

i would contact the cheektowaga town board as well.
They oversee a lot of sloan stuff.
IF YOU SEE RATS TELL CHEEKTOWAGA IMMEDIATELY!

While they blow all of our tax money on worthless projects, the most wasted effort is going to the rat problem, so they'll actually care!

When we were at village hall yesterday evening, one of the trustees, Mr Sisti, was present when we we telling the "code enforcer" our complaint. They actaully went back and forth with each other and Mr. Sisti said he couldn't believe this guy moved them closer to the neighbors. He mentioned something along the lines of "nuisance " being in the ordinance. He sounded like he knew alot more than this "code enforcer" and was alot more sincere. He did promise they will look into the problem. This "code enforcer" acted just like an arrogant government worker. While I'm not a big fan of local gov't, I will say it is nice to atleast have one of the trustees on our side.

We've been pushing this guy to enclose the dumpsters with a fence for some time as well as moving them against his building. He made the problem worse by moving their current location. The ironic part is that he is using my fence as the back wall of his fenced in enclosure. This is the same fence that I asked him to pay half for after one of his customers destroyed my chain link. It improved the look of both our properties. His response: " people think I make alot of money" so I ended up flipping the $3500 bill myself. Talk about cheap! He probabley makes that the first half hour he is open!

These dumpsters are less than ten ft from my daughters' swinset playhouse which stands about ten feet high. He can obviously see it from his parking lot. He either lacks common sense or is trying to make life for the neighbors
on purpose. I know for a fact he is trying to buy part of one of the other neighbors property.

As far as customers back when the previous owners ran the store....Like I mentioned, it was a Mom and Pop type village store. Its customers consisted of village residents. People that respected the neighborhood. Now this guy turned it into a very high volume supermarket bringing people from all differernt parts of the area. And judging by the actions of some of these people, it does't look like they respect their own neighborhood, let alone ours. Longtime village residents have already commented on how its starting to look like the east side.

The difference betwen the amount of customers then and now is like night and day.

He does have a decent size parking lot but it is always jammed packed with cars and people end up parking on our side streets..2 and 3 streets away. There are always traffic jams in front and around the store from people trying to pull in. What use to be a nice quiet village street, is now a very dangerous area. It's pretty sad that I cant let my daughters ride their bikes around the house anymore. Its just not safe. And now they can't play on their own swingswet! It's only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt there, and if it does happen, both the village and Camillo will be held responsible.

I tried giving you reasoning behind a constructive argument. To say that he now has more customers than the previous operator is not a valid argument.

This store apparently does a very good business, until the level of service drops off, the customers will keep coming. You need to take this to the Cheektowaga Building Inspector if you want a chance for change. No guarantees, but the squeaky wheel usually gets the grease, if it squeaks long enough. Good luck.

I just wanted to point out that those of us that live near this store have had to tolerate numerous problems that we have no control over. As this this small village store's customer base grew to supermarket levels, the problems associated with it quickly followed. Even though the previous administration in Sloan were aware of what was happening, not only did they look the other way, but they granted building permits for additions that allowed him to make the business grow even larger. The parking lot was undersized as it was creating traffic jams and major parking issues onthe surrounding side streets, yet they allowed him to put on a massive addition to the rear of the building which is basically one big freezer. This made for even less parking. And it also gave him the ability to run a wholesale business out the back door which he won't admit to and has no permits for.

The dumpster location is just one of many problems with this store. The reason I brang up the rest of the "crap" about the customers is to simply show that all he cares about is building the business and does not care about being a "good" neighbor.

The village has its own building inspector which is suppose to handle these issues.

It makes me wonder is any village officials are getting meat packages to look the other way!

Aside from complaining at the village level, would it be worth going to a higher level???
I have no idea...I've never been a complainer so it's all new to me....but now I'm simply fed up with it.
